F1 penalty points: Who is at risk of a race ban?
Pierre Gasly will have been a relieved man when Australian Grand Prix stewards decided not to penalise him for a late-race with Esteban Ocon, as it meant he avoided a potential one-race suspension from F1.
F1's penalty points system is designed to punish drivers for on-track misdemeanours, with 12 points on their Super Licence within a 12-month period resulting in a race ban.
No driver has yet suffered this fate, but Gasly is only two points away from the 12-point threshold, meaning any penalty issued at Melbourne could have seen him miss the following Grand Prix in Azerbaijan on April 30th.
Any penalty points that drivers accrue are automatically wiped from their records after 12 months, and with Gasly not set to lose any of his points until May 22, the Frenchman will have to be careful to keep his nose clean across the next three races in Baku, Miami and Imola.
Second on F1's penalty point list is Lance Stroll on eight points, although three of those are due to expire before the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix, meaning Stroll will be on a much safer five points when he next takes to the track.
Further down the list, Carlos Sainz was the only driver to receive any penalty points in Australia, being slapped with a single point after tangling with Fernando Alonso, while Zhou Guanyu drops down from four to three points between races.
