After a successful November international break in which they earned a direct ticket to the Copa América 2024, the Mexican National Team are now preparing to go into the semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League against Panama (Thursday March 21, with kick off at 10:15 p.m. ET / 7:15 p.m. PT.). One of the leaders of the current side is Edson Álvarez, who recently remembered his time with Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino as manager during the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Although today both figures have very different situations at West Ham in the Premier League and Inter Miami in MLS, the midfielder was clear about the poor treatment he received from the Argentine. However, Álvarez was keen to first look at the brighter side of the situation: “I am grateful, at some point I had a great relationship with ‘Tata’. A relationship in which we would chat and share ideas”.

Edson on Tata: ‘It was as if he had never seen me play’

[Martino] is a person who likes to talk a lot about Football and he was very interested in Ajax’s system [where Edson played], we shared a lot of things”, he concluded in the first part of the interview.

After the niceties came a stronger, more direct opinion: “In the World Cup I didn’t feel I was an undisputed starter, but I felt I had many chances to play. In the Game against Poland the relationship was the same as always. The Game against Argentina came and I realise that I was a stranger, as if he had never seen me play; I didn’t start and I didn’t play”, he told Caliente TV.

At that time, the fact that Edson did not play against the Argentines was highly criticised and the prospects for moving on the World Cup became very difficult for after the defeat against ‘La Albiceleste’. The side ended up being knocked out of the comPetition in the group stage and Martino said goodbye to the job as head coach of the national team with a more than negative general opinion on his time there.

Although it will not be for a national team Game, the South American coach will return to Mexico for the CONCACAF Champions Cup 2024 quarter-final between Inter Miami and Monterrey.

It should be noted that the Monterrey fans are expected to give Martino a hostile reception, but it should not be forgotten that during his time with ‘El Tri’, he relied heavily on Rayados players. In any case, the coin is flipping in the air regarding who will win the Champions Cup Game, but regardless of that fact, the issues with Mexico do not seem to stop.
