Cristiano Ronaldo has confessed that he does not know if he will still be a Manchester United player once the January transfer window opens.

The veteran striker is keen to leave the club in the near future and United are ready to part ways with Ronaldo as well, particularly after his inflammatory interview which saw him admit he has no respect for manager Erik ten Hag.

Aware of the implications of his interview, Ronaldo conceded that he does not know whether he will return to United after the World Cup.

"It's difficult to tell," he told Talk TV when asked if he would still be at the club in January. "My focus is on the World Cup. It's probably my last World Cup. I don't know what will happen after the World Cup.

"But the fans will always be in my heart and I hope fans will be on my side whether I am back or not.

"Nobody's perfect. I'm a human being. I will always make mistakes. It's hard to tell what is going to happen. My focus is on the Portugal national team."

He added: "Maybe it would be good for Manchester and probably good for me as well to have a new chapter. If I come back, I'll be the same Cristiano, but I hope people will be on my side and let me shine like I did at other clubs."

One of United's top targets to replace Ronaldo is PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo, who 90min understands could be available in January.
