Could Inter Miami’s MLS game against Charlotte be suspended this weekend due to Hurricane Helene?

As Hurricane Helene tears its way northwards up the Gulf of Mexico, many people in Miami are preparing for the worst.

Life-threatening storms are said to be expected, with people told to have kits and plans in place for when the wild weather slams into the coastline.

Of course, the safety of those affected is paramount, and sport takes a back seat in moments like these, but the question remains of whether or not the sporting fixtures around the region set to be hit will go ahead. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the latest on whether or not teams such as Orlando City, Inter Miami, Nashville SC and Atlanta United will play in the upcoming round of MLS action.

Will Hurricane Helene stop MLS games this weekend?

First of all, there is, at the time of writing, no official word from MLS on whether or not any number of games will be suspended. The only midweek football action across the country is LAFC vs Sporting Kansas City in the US Open Cup and Columbus Crew hosting Club América in the Campeones Cup. Both games are being held far away from the hurricane’s path.

Inter Miami

Inter Miami take on Charlotte FC at Chase Stadium this weekend, with the Game set to kick off on Saturday 28 September at 7:30pm ET. In the same way as MLS, at the time of writing, no precautions are in place by the franchise and tickets are still on sale via official channels.

Atlanta United

Atlanta United’s Game against Philadelphia takes place at the same time as Inter Miami’s clash this weekend. However, the Game will not be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium but Subaru Park in Pennsylvania, meaning that the hurricane will not affect the fixture. Travel to the Game could well end up being affected, but nothing has been announced which suggests the Game is at risk of not being played.

Both Nashville SC and Orlando City play away from home at the weekend, with games against New England Revolution and FC Dallas scheduled, respectively. That means that they will be a long way from the hurricane’s path but, as with Atlanta, travel may be affected.
