CFB Week 12 opening line best bet: Tulane Green Wave -6.5 (-115) over Navy Midshipmen
Tulane has been on a roll since its consecutive losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma early this season. The Green Wave have won 7 Games in a row since Week 3, covering the spread in 6 of those contests with a 4-1 ATS record on the road. They beat Temple and Charlotte by a combined score of 86-9 in the last 2 weeks, and their defense – which is 3rd in PPA and 13th in success rate outside of garbage time since Week 6 – should be primed for another strong performance on Saturday against Navy given its ability to stop the run. Tulane is in the the top 30 in opposing rush yards per Game this season (114.60), and it is 2nd in opposing rush PPA since early October. Furthermore, the Green Wave defense is top 10 in opposing rush success rate, stuff rate and opposing line yards in that span of time, meaning Navy’s offense is going to be met with a ton of resistance at the line of scriMMAge. Tulane’s defense also has generated havoc at a top 5 rate since Week 6, while boasting top 20 marks in sacks and tackles for loss this season.
Like Navy, Tulane relies heavily on the run when it has the ball, but has a much better matchup against a Navy rush defense that ranks 66th in rush PPA and 80th in rush success rate in the last 6 weeks. The Midshipmen are 110th in stuff rate and do not generate havoc anywhere near the same rate as the Green Wave, so Tulane’s ground game should have plenty of room to get going against this front. Look for running back Makhi Hughes, who has gained at least 115 rushing yards in 5 consecutive games, to improve on his 1,209 yards and 13 touchdowns with a massive performance in a Tulane win and cover in Annapolis. Playable to -8.
