Chris Sutton Gives Aberdeen Title Race Verdict
Former Celtic striker turned pundit Chris Sutton has given his verdict on Aberdeen and whether they are currently in a title race with the Hoops.
It comes after the Dons came from two goals down to secure a hard-earned point at Parkhead on Saturday.
After first-half strikes from Japanese duo Reo Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi, Jimmy Thelin’s men looked down and out at the break.
Following a few smart tactical changes from the Swede, though, Aberdeen soon found themselves level and almost in front had it not been for Duk’s hand.
Celtic could have easily won the Game, too, and piled the pressure on the visitors’ goal in the dying embers. The Reds eventually held on as the spoils were shared.
Brendan Rodgers and Co. were disappointed after the match, but by the weekend’s end, they had surprisingly extended their advantage over Rangers at the top of the table to six points.
Aberdeen are giving Celtic a closer run for first place than the Gers at the minute, and Sutton thinks the Pittodrie side are in a race for the title with the reigning champions.
“I think the confidence has been there from Jimmy Thelin’s team this season,” he said (Sky Sports).
“This result yesterday [Saturday] and the nature of the comeback [meant] the confidence would have gone up a notch, and at this moment in time, they [Aberdeen] are in a title race.
“I think everybody now takes Aberdeen really seriously.”
Seeing how long the Dons maintain their current run should be intriguing.
Credit has to go to Thelin and his men for their impressive start to the season, which has seen them go toe to toe with the Hoops up to this point.
Before Celtic Travel to Motherwell next weekend, Aberdeen host newly promoted Dundee United at Pittodrie.
They then welcome Rangers to the northeast a few days later in a Game the Bhoys will keep a keen eye on.
For now, though, the Hoops’ full focus remains on Wednesday’s colossal Champions League tie with Atalanta.
