Chris Sutton, much like the majority of Celtic fans, was left baffled as the Hoops were denied a penalty on the opening weekend of the Scottish Premiership season against Kilmarnock.

The Bhoys won the Game 4-0, but that is no excuse for the poor officiating which denied them the chance to net from the spot.

Indeed, with five minutes to go, Matt O’Riley played a sublime, lobbed pass over the top of the Killie defence for Kyogo Furuhashi to latch onto. The Japanese striker got to the ball first and knocked it beyond Robby McCrorie, but was wiped out clean by the ‘keeper.

Kyogo was adjudged to have been onside, and a spot-kick should have been awarded.

Sutton was shocked at Don Robertson’s decision not to give a penalty. “That’s ridiculous”, he said (Sky Sports via RecordSport).

“I am baffled and absolutely speechless. If he’s onside that should be a penalty. How has the penalty not been awarded there? McCrorie knows he didn’t get the contact.”

It is a new season, but the same old controversy over refereeing decisions remains in Scottish Football.

Hopefully, over the course of the campaign, we see fewer poor calls like this one.
