‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez is set to sign for MLS side Portland Timbers

Cabecita’ Rodríguez’s days are numbered at Club América. The Uruguayan, who left the capital club weeks ago, will be a new player at the Portland Timbers of MLS, as confirmed by Carlos Rodríguez Hernández of FOX Sports.

While we are yet to have an official announcement from either the player or the two clubs involved, everything points to an agreement being sealed between all involved and the Apertura 2023 champion will move away from Liga MX.

According to the journalist César Luis Merlo, Rodríguez will leave for Portland for approximately US$5 million and sign a 3-year contract with an option for one more year.

The current Portland Timbers squad - the team from Oregon’s largest city - is full of South Americans, with names such as Colombians Juan Mosquera, Santiago Moreno and Dairon Asprilla, Argentines Claudio Bravo and David Ayala, or Paraguayan Cristhian Paredes, all managed by Englishman Phil Neville.

Rodríguez has certainly left his mark on Mexican soccer. In May 2021, he was part of Cruz Azul’s historic generation that won the championship and ended a 24-year streak without lifting a Liga MX trophy.

From there he moved on to Al-Nassr and returned to América to celebrate a title once again in December of last year. Portland Timbers sit top of the MLS Western Conference after three Games. They have played 3 and won 2, drawing the other one and have scored 8 goals, conceding 4.
