Brendan Rodgers gives honest reaction to Celtic performance in tight win over Dundee
Brendan Rodgers has been reacting to today’s 2-1 Celtic victory over Dundee at Dens Park in the Scottish Premiership.
The Bhoys remain three points clear at the top of the table after Rangers beat St Mirren by the same scoreline earlier in the day.
James Forrest was the difference-maker on Tayside, netting a sublime double to rekindle the best of his Celtic form and deliver the victory. His first was a ferocious volley, while he showed great perseverance to hassle the opposition defence and net his second.
The manager has him firing at a perfect stage of the season and it’s fantastic to be able to call upon his experience and quality as Celtic chase trophies.
After the match, Rodgers admitted his team were not at their best today but lauded their ability to get the job done regardless.
Brendan Rodgers on Celtic victory at Dens Park
Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, he said when asked if it was a nervy end to the Game: “It was. We were in control of the Game at 2-0 but when the goal goes in it gives them a little bit of hope so you then have to show your spirit and defend your box. We had lots of balls, corners and throw-ins into the box but I was very pleased to get over the line.
“The pitch makes a difference. It was dry and bumpy so that never makes for a fluid Game and you could see that in the play. There’s no doubt that Dundee have had a fantastic season. I’m so pleased for Tony Docherty and his staff. They can be a threat so you have to over come that.
“We’ve played better than we did today but it was all-important to get the three points and the players did that really well by the end.”
Celtic tests keep coming
Next up for Celtic is Hearts, who have come out on top against the Bhoys in the previous two meetings between the clubs. That will be no easy Game, even if it is at Celtic Park.
Rodgers’ side need to be up for the fight in that one and show they are good enough to dominate possession, win second balls and create clear-cut opportunities.
Another victory would be the perfect pre-cursor to a mammoth upcoming derby against Rangers.
