McGregor, who earned 63 caps for Scotland and scored a memorable goal at the Euros in 2021, recently comPeted in this summer’s tournament in Germany. Despite the national team’s failure to advance past the group stages, McGregor’s performance remained commendable.

At 31, McGregor has opted to concentrate on his role at Celtic, where he continues his leadership as team captain.

With the World Cup qualifiers on the horizon and the next tournament two years away, when McGregor would be 33, his decision comes at a critical juncture.

Reacting to McGregor’s retirement, Rodgers expressed both understanding and support for his player’s decision, acknowledging the intense demands placed on international athletes.

The manager said that from a Celtic perspective, the news was really good, with the Celtic captain now getting the chance for a rare day off.

He told Clyde 1 SSB: “I had spoke to Callum and was aware of his intentions. He’s had a great seven years with the Scotland. 63 caps.

“From Celtic’s perspective, it’s really good news. He’ll get the chance to recover, you all know the amount of Games that he plays. We’ll give him those opportunities to have a breather because he’s really intense and that’s what I love about him and his apPetite to improve. He never has a day off, ever.

“Whenever he has a free day he’s either recovering or thinking about the Game.

“So these little windows he has will give him the chance to rest.

“But a fantastic career that he’s had for his country and he can be very proud of that and now get into the next part of his career here.”
