Brendan Rodgers Pinpoints Celtic’s ‘Real leader’ Amidst Callum McGregor Absence
Brendan Rodgers has praised Alistair Johnston for his leadership qualities following Celtic’s 2-0 win over Dundee last night.
With Rodgers opting to shake up the line-up, the Bhoys took their time settling into the Game and missed a series of opportunities in the first half.
However, they eventually broke the deadlock early in the second 45, thanks to a determined Johnston, who continues to make a mark in the scoring charts this season.
It was on the hour mark when the Canadian full-back found his moment, slipping in a goal from a deflected Yang Hyun-jun cross.
Known for his defensive reliability, Johnston has become a surprise asset in front of goal as well this season, trebling his tally in Hoops.
After a scrappy first half, his goal energised the side, sparking a more confident display that ultimately saw the Hoops through to victory.
Johnston, who wore the captain’s armband on Sunday against Motherwell in Callum McGregor’s absence, was again handed leadership responsibilities when Cameron Carter-Vickers went off last night.
The Celtic boss was full of praise for the 26-year-old after the game, highlighting Johnston’s all-around contribution on and off the pitch.
“He’s got the feeling now of scoring goals,” said Rodgers (BBC), as he didn’t hesitate to express his admiration for Johnston’s qualities post-match.
“He’s top class. He’s a real leader within this team. He’s very strong defensively. Physically good, technically strong, tactically, he understands the Game, and he’s a tough boy leader.”
Rodgers also pointed to Johnston’s instincts in front of goal. He said: “It was a really good goal because he’s on the move in the box and finishes it well.”
Johnston’s rise to prominence within the Celtic squad has made him a key figure. Not only is he steadfast in defence, but his attacking contributions have added a new dimension to his Game, giving Rodgers’ side an added edge.
With his natural leadership on full display, Johnston is proving to be a cornerstone for Celtic as they push forward this season.
