Brendan Rodgers has a Massive Selection Headache Heading into Dortmund Clash – Opinion
Brendan Rodgers is facing a delightful dilemma ahead of Celtic’s Champions League showdown against Borussia Dortmund.
This comes courtesy of Paulo Bernardo’s great performance during the 6-0 win over St Johnstone, as well as previous SPFL outings, like the Glasgow Derby and the trip to St Mirren.
Bernardo was superb in Saturday’s clash against St Johnstone. Filling in for Reo Hatate, who has been a regular feature in Celtic’s midfield, Bernardo made a compelling case for his inclusion in the starting eleven for the upcoming European night in Dortmund. With a price tag of £3.5 million since making his loan move from Benfica permanent, Bernardo is proving to be worth every penny.
The Portuguese playmaker was involved directly in two of Celtic’s six goals, showcasing a mix of finesse with a sublime strike and creative vision with a clever assist. His contribution helped maintain Celtic’s perfect start to the season, setting pulses racing about what he could offer on the bigger stage of the Champions League.
Rodgers now faces a tough decision. Hatate has been effective in Europe, assisting in the 5-1 thrashing of Slovan Bratislava. However, with Bernardo’s recent form, it seems almost unjust to sideline him.
Bernardo’s case isn’t just about his goal and assist; it’s his overall playmaking ability and how he seems to elevate those around him. Bernardo’s creativity and the offensive threat could be crucial in breaking down a typically sturdy German defence.
The question for Rodgers is not if Bernardo deserves to start, but rather how he can afford not to start him.
Does Rodgers revert to his tried and tested lineup, or does he ride the hot hand in Bernardo, hoping that the young midfielder can translate his domestic form onto one of the biggest stages in world Football?
This selection headache, while challenging, is a testament to Celtic’s strength and depth this season.
