Bobby Madden has come to the defence of VAR following two ‘controversial’ calls during Celtic’s match against Hearts at the weekend.

The decisions, to any level-headed supporter, were correct, despite the faux outrage from some after the match.

In the first instance, referee Colin Steven initially awarded Hearts a penalty for a handball by Liam Scales, but this decision was overturned after VAR intervention prompted a review. Madden supported the decision to reverse the penalty, noting that while the referee’s initial call was understandable in the live moment, the VAR system correctly rectified the mistake.

In the second incident, VAR intervened to award Celtic a penalty for a handball by James Penrice, which had not been spotted by the on-field officials. Madden explained that Penrice’s arms were away from his body, making it a clear handball offence according to the rules. Again, he endorsed the use of VAR to ensure that the right decision was made.

Writing on Instagram, he posted: “Hearts penalty. Incorrect call by referee, but totally understandable live. I’d rather see a referee make a call than rely on VAR. Good VAR intervention.

“Celtic penalty. Not identified on field. Arms are away from the body and a punishable handball. Good VAR intervention.”

VAR did have some howlers elsewhere at the weekend, but as far as Celtic and Hearts are concerned, none came during the encounter at Parkhead.

In a few weeks time, the VAR review show will likely reiterate Madden’s post. It’s a good addition and will hopefully bring more transparency and clarity to the Scottish Game.
