Sutton Urges Rodgers to Drop Celtic Hero Against Dortmund
Chris Sutton’s latest column has sparked a debate over who should lead the line for Celtic against Borussia Dortmund. With Kyogo Furuhashi and Adam Idah both available, Sutton suggests Brendan Rodgers faces a tough decision. Many fans will see Kyogo as the natural choice, given his track record, but Sutton isn’t convinced it’s as straightforward as that.
Sutton acknowledges Kyogo’s status as a “class act” and his ability to deliver in crucial moments. The Japanese forward has become a key figure for Celtic since his arrival, scoring important goals both domestically and in Europe. However, Sutton believes there’s more to consider than just star power when it comes to facing a side like Dortmund.
Rodgers brought in Adam Idah for a reason, and according to Sutton, it’s not just about depth. Sutton argues that the decision should be about stylt. “I’d say Idah is a better bet if the manager feels Dortmund could have sustained periods,” Sutton wrote in his RecordSport column, highlighting the Irishman’s ability to fight for possession and hold up the ball in difficult fixtures. Idah’s physicality and work rate could be pivotal if Celtic find themselves under pressure at Signal Iduna Park.
While Kyogo has earned a reputation for stepping up in big Games, Sutton raises a key concern about his form away from home in Europe. Many of Kyogo’s best performances on the European stage have come at Celtic Park. He scored against Lazio and Atletico Madrid last season, but those goals were all in Glasgow. When it comes to away ties, Kyogo has struggled at times to make the same impact.
Kyogo’s European Record Under Scrutiny
Sutton points out that this inconsistency isn’t a new problem. Under Ange Postecoglou, Kyogo often found himself isolated in European away Games, unable to get involved in the build-up. Despite his recent goal against Slovan Bratislava, Sutton questions whether Kyogo is the right man for the job in a hostile German environment.
With Dortmund expected to dominate possession and play an aggressive style, Sutton believes Rodgers may lean towards the more physical Idah. It’s a tactical dileMMA that hinges on whether Celtic are looking to impose their own Game on Dortmund or adapt to the German side’s physicality and relentless pressing.
Rodgers has a big call to make.
