Bayern Munich 3-0 Lazio: what do the stats say?

24 shots, seven efforts on target to Lazio's none, and over three expected goals. I said it at half time and I'll say it again. It didn't always feel as if Bayern were blowing the Italians away, but they managed to do it on the sly. Never in doubt.

Bayern progress to Champions League quarter-finals

For the 12th time in 13 seasons, Bayern Munich have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League. They've been knocked out in the last eight in each of the last three years, though. 

Full-time: Bayern Munich 3-0 Lazio (Bayern win 3-1 on aggregate)

Harry Kane's double seals the Bayern comeback! It was rarely in doubt, if we''re being honest.

Neuer very nearly gifts Castellano an open goal as he chips a risky pass up to Dier. Whoops. 

Bayern playing keep-ball. Job done. 

Four minutes of injury time to be played. 

Pellegrini is the third Lazio man booked in quick succession for taking down Laimer after a loose touch.

Just what we needed, another sub. Gnabry is back from injury, Musiala makes way.

Laimer comes on for Sané, who was much improved in the second half. 

Immediately after, Kane is wiped out by Cataldi, who goes in the book. Pure frustration. 

Kane back defending at his own corner flag and wins possession off Guendouzi. Superb team work.

A goal for Lazio now would set up a grandstand finish, which is what we all want to see (apart from Bayern fans), right? 

Lazio are spending a bit of time inside the Bayern half, although they aren't carrying much of a threat. Their fans are outsinging their Bayern counterparts at the moment, though. 

When you're 3-0 down and having played 80 minutes, you must be delighted to see a fresh Alphonso Davies coming onto the field...He bursts down the left but shows too much of the ball to Gila, who nips that attack in the bud.

Kimmich's crossing has been a bit off in this Game. That was another poor one from the right flank.

Lazio's Romagnoli is first in the book for leaving a bit on Kane as they challenge for a high ball.

The glut of changes continues. Kamada replaces Luis Alberto for the Italians. 

De Ligt gets the corner away and Pellegrini then sticks a wild cross straight out of play. 

A corner for Lazio, who are running out of time here.

Canada's Alphonso Davies and teenager Mathys Tel are on, Guerreiro and Müller go off.

Three-time Champions League winner Pedro is on for Felipe Anderson, who had some nice touches which ultimately led to little. 

Not Harry Kane's best effort, that. He finds space in the box on the left but balloons the ball over the bar with teammates waiting in the middle. 

That was quite the flurry of chances. I can see another goal or two coming here!

Luis Alberto almost pulls a goal back!

Almost a lifeline for Lazio! Luis Alberto lines one up from the edge of the box but curls it wide of the near post!

Sané fires just wide!

Seconds later, Sané fires a rocket towards the Lazio goal, which just clears the bar!

Müller hits the post!

Musiala plays Müller clean through and the attacker's shot from a difficult angle is touched onto the post by Provedel!

Amazing what a few goals can do for confidence. All of a sudden, Leroy Sané is sprinting back to dispossess Anderson inside the Bayern half. 

Is there any doubt Bayern are going through to the quarter-finals? I'm going to say "no," but you never know...

3-1 to Bayern on aggregate

33 goals in 33 games for Bayern for Harry Kane. 

They could do with another goal though. 

Bayern taking the sting out of the game with a long spell of possession, which seems entirely sensible.

That's a lovely, lovely move from Lazio to get up the field but it breaks down when it really matters, on the edge of the Bayern box. 

Immobile will be sitting on the bench thinking about that first-half miss...

And if he isn't, then he should be.

Guerreiro shoots wide!

Almost a third for the hosts! Müller's clever run opens up space on the left for Guerreiro, whose powerful strike fizzes across goal and wide!

Another decent passage of play from the Italians, who aren't finding it too hard to get into the Bayern half. Maybe there's still some hope for them yet. 

Musiala fires just wide!

Seconds later, Musiala cuts in from the left and sees his shot deflect just wide off Guendouzi!

Kane close to a third!

Müller floats a cross in from the right and it's only just too high for Kane!

Immoible has been down for a minute or so, but it looks as if he'll be OK to carry on. 

Immobile down in the box!

Marusic races down the right and fires the ball into the box. Immobile and De Ligt get there at almost the same time, and the striker goes down in a heap. He did look to get the first touch, although it doesn't look like a penalty at first glance. 

A midfield battle at the moment, with neither team able to assert themselves. 

It was decent, but Luis Alberto's delivery is headed clear by Goretzka. 

Kimmich fouls Zaccagni on the Lazio left and the visitors have a free-kick in a decent position. 

Not much joy for Lazio so far, who have been unable to get a hold of possession in the first couple of minutes.

Bayern up the ante in the second leg

It doesn't feel as if Bayern have been brilliant, although the numbers do suggest they've been pretty good. Certainly compared to the first leg in Rome...

Bayern Munich 2-0 Lazio: half-time thoughts

Lazio are 2-0 down and 2-1 behind in the tie but don't necessarily deserve to be. They’ve defended bravely and carried a threat in attack. And they should have been ahead just before Kane scored, with Immobile somehow heading wide from close range.

Two minutes later, the Italians were punished. Guerreiro’s deflected shot bobbled up for Kane, who headed beyond Provedel, who might feel he should’ve done better.

And with the last touch of the half, Müller flicked De Ligt’s volley in from close range to put Bayern in the driving seat in the tie.

Lazio have been good on the ball so far, but they’ll have to be even better to get back into this in the second half.

At first, it appeared as if De Ligt's volley had flown straight it, but it quickly became apparent Müller had got a touch in front of Provedel. The German looked as if he might've been offisde, but I don't think there was even a VAR check. 

I've got to say, it's a bit harsh on Lazio, who have defended very well and also carried a threat going forward. But it was never going to be easy against Bayern, who are now in the driving seat.

I'm going to say it again. That second Bayern goal is HUUUUUUGE in the context of this tie.

Just one extra minute to be played. 

Manuel Neuer going walkabout, as he tends to do, and almost gets his pocket picked by Immobile. But not quite. 

Lazio passes are just a little looser than they were earlier on. Guendouzi has been the main culprit in the last few minutes.

And that should be 2-0! Sané squares it for Musiala, who somehow prods wide from close range!

That's the best chance of the game so far, by a distance. Lazio committed lots of bodies forward too.

Lazio should be ahead! Zaccagni's left-wing cross flicks off De Ligt and falls perfectly at the back post for Immobile, whose diving header is off target from close range!

Another Kimmich cross from the right and Dier, who has made his way upfield, heads a couple of yards over!

Oh, wow! Müller tries to feed the ball inside for Musiala to run onto for shot, only for ref Vinčić to slip and block the pass! He holds his hands up to all four corners of the ground. Don't think I've ever seen that before!

Bayern have a chance to get the ball into the box from a dangerous position, but Kimmich's free-kick is howling. No chance they're scoring like that. 

Obviously, as soon as I say that, Luis Alberto takes a horrendous touch and sticks it straight out of play. 

I know I've said this a few times but I really want to emphasise it - Lazio are looking very tidy in possession.

Where's David Beckham or Wayne Rooney when you need him, Lazio?

A brilliant switch from Müller to Kimmich looks very promising for Bayern, but he takes a heavy touch and is dispossessed by Luis Alberto inside the box. 

Zaccagni feeds the ball into the box to Immobile, who gets a touch and goes down under pressure from De Ligt. No danger of a penalty, though. 

Bayern need to get the ball out wide as much as they can. There's no space through the middle. 

Almost spoke too soon! Kimmich pulls the ball back for Müller, whose shot is blocked. It falls to Guerreiro on the left, whose effort gets the same treatment! Excellent defending!

Lazio look to have weathered that mini-storm. Sarri will be happy with how his team has started. 

Kane gets a talking to from ref Vinčić for grabbing Anderson by the neck in midfield. 

Lazio are struggling to get up the field at the minute. Zaccagni wins a free-kick on the halfway line and gives his defence a bit of respite. 

Back underway and that Bayern corner comes to nothing. 

Slovenian ref Slavko Vinčić has a problem with his watch, it seems. Timewasting from the ref.

That was close from the edge of the box! 

Guerreiro gets in behind on the left and plays a square pass to Müller, who can't sort his feet out in time from close range!

Bayern are just starting to take control of possession again here.

Kimmich plays it short to Musiala, whose fierce drive from distance is beaten away by Provedel!

Kane rather luckily wins a corner. What can Bayern do here? 

Vecino almost in!

Vecino makes a brilliant run from deep and very nearly gets on the end of a pass in behind, only for Dier to stick out a leg to clear!

Luis Alberto whips a danger corner into the near post, Müller does well to head clear. 

Despite Bayern's early threat, Lazio have made a good start themselves. They're knocking the ball about nicely. 

Excellent work from Vecino to stop Musiala making tracks. He'll be one of the main Bayern dangermen, without question. 

De Ligt gets his head to a high, hanging corner but can't get it anywhere near the target.

Sané skips away down the right and tees up Musiala, whose shot is blocked by Gila!

Chance for Sané!

Bayern race up the other end and create a decent opening for Sané! The winger comes inside on his favoured left foot but shoots weakly at Provedel.

Anderson is looking especially lively down the right and passes inside for Guendouzi, whose low shot from the edge of the box goes comfortably wide. 

Lazio are getting their first few proper touches and are looking confident. 

Another Kimmich raid down the right leads to another cross, which Lazio just about manage to get away. 

A draw would be enough for Lazio to progress. Only thing is they've drawn just five of 38 games this season...

Bayern are having all the early possession. Which we thought would happen. 

Bayern are first on the attack but Kimmich's chipped cross is just too high for Kane at the back post.

Bayern and Lazio also met in the round of 16 in the 2020-21 Champions League, with the Germans comfortably progressing to the quarter-finals, where they lost to PSG on away goals. The teams had never met in a competitive fixture before then.

Lazio's Champions League record

Lazio's best performance in the Champions League, meanwhile, came in 1999-00, the same year they won their last Serie A title. That season, they reached the quarter-finals for the one and only time, a feat they can match today.

Bayern have been crowned European champions six times, winning the Champions League on three occasions. Their most recent success was in the Covid-hit 2019-20 competition, when they beat PSG behind closed doors in the final. 

Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri's pre-match thoughts

“We have to be brave and determined. Nothing is impossible in Football, that must give us courage. It won’t be easy. Bayern have immense quality. We have to fight in the defensive phase, but we have to have the courage to hurt them offensively”.

Maurizio Sarri will forever be associated with putting together a flamboyant Napoli team which almost halted Juventus’ domination in Serie A. He later won the Europa League with Chelsea and the Italian title with the Old Lady, who sacked him months later.

He has led Lazio to fifth and second-place finishes in two years in charge, although this season has been rather less successful…until now.

"We weren’t surprised by Lazio’s strengths and approach. We will try to play more aggressively. We’ll have to play with more conviction over 90 minutes. Like we did in the first ten or 15 minutes in Rome. We have to play with determination. It’s clear that it’s difficult to make the game attractive when every goal can decide the game.

“We made too many individual mistakes in the second half in Rome. We have 90 minutes to show a reaction. Lazio’s last few games don’t play too much of a role for me, of course we’ve analysed them. The focus is on the first leg. We have to start the game with courage and passion and keep that up for 90 minutes.”

Thomas Tuchel to leave Bayern at the end of the season

Tuchel has been one of the most sought-after managers in world soccer in recent years and only joined Bayern less than a year ago. Yet it has already been announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season after losing 11 of his first 46 games in charge.

He’ll almost certainly become the first Bayern boss in 12 years not to win a league title.

Back when Bayern looked pretty impressive in the first few months of the season, they made light work of progressing from Group A. Thomas Tuchel’s side dropped just two points (at home to Copenhagen), beating Manchester United home and away.

Ciro Immobile still on the move for Lazio

In true modern soccer fashion, Lazio frontman Ciro Immobile has plenty of detractors even though he’s had a superb goalscoring record for the best part of a decade. The 34-year-old is the club’s all-time leading scorer by a distance having scored 206 goals in 329 games, which includes nine in 12 Champions League fixtures. Only seven men have scored more goals than him in Serie A history. 

He netted the only goal from the penalty spot in Rome and will be the visitors’ main threat in Munich.

Harry Kane key for faltering Bayern

You’ve got to feel for Harry Kane (at least a bit), don’t you? Plenty has been made of the fact he’s never won a trophy at senior level. He’s reached four finals with Tottenham Hotspur and England and lost them all. Moving to Bayern was supposed to guarantee silverware, yet the Champions League is his only realistic hope left this season.

Not that it’s all his fault. The England captain has scored 27 goals in 24 league games and 31 in 32 overall, which means he’ll likely be key if Bayern are to go all the way in the UCL.

Let’s just say things haven’t been great for Lazio since they upset Bayern in the first leg. They’ve lost three of their subsequent four matches, including the last twoto Fiorentina and Christian Pulisic's AC Milan, which has seriously dented their hopes of qualifying for Europe again through their league position.

After a five-match winning streak either side of New Year, they’ve lost five of their last nine games.

Bayern Munich current form

Up until their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern had been having a reasonable season. But they wouldn’t have been banking on Xabi Alonso’s team being nearly perfect in the Bundesliga (they have dropped only eight points all season), which had put the Bavarians under pressure even before they lost at the BayArena.

Since then, it’s all come crashing down for Thomas Tuchel and Co. One win and three defeats in five games means the former Chelsea boss won’t be in charge next season, and the Champions League is their only hope of silverware.

Inside the Bayern dressing room

It goes without saying this is a huge night for Bayern. Their title hopes are all but dead, and they're already out of the German Cup (which won't have been their top priority anyway). The Champions League is all they have left. 

Lazio’s Serie A struggles

It’s been a season of inconsistency so far for Lazio, as proven by their results in Serie A. In their 27 league Games, they have won 12 and lost 11 (drawing just four), leaving them in ninth place in the table with 11 matches to play. Not what they will have been hoping for after finishing runners-up to Napoli in 2022-23.

The top four in Italy will definitely qualify for next season’s revamped Champions League, while fifth could yet sneak in because of the new qualification system. Lazio are currently seven points behind city rivals Roma, who are fifth, and also trail Atalanta, Napoli and Fiorentina in the fight for Europa League and Conference League places.

They are, though, through to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, where they will face Juventus over two legs. The victor will play either Atalanta or Fiorentina in the final, with cup winners qualifying for the Europa League group stage.

Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga dominance over

Bayern Munich have, quite incredibly (and boringly), won 11 Bundesliga titles in a row. They aren’t going to make it 12 this year, though, barring a spectacular collapse from Bayer Leverkusen. An intriguing title race looked as it it might go to the wire up until Xabi Alonso’s team battered the Bavarians just under a month ago, stretching their lead at the top of the table.

Bayern have since surprisingly lost at Bochum and drawn away to Freiburg, allowing unbeaten Leverkusen to open up a 10 point gap with 10 games to play. That’s surely insurmountable?

Oh yeh, and they lost in the second round of the DFB-Pokal (the German Cup) to FC Saarbrücken of the third division. Oops.

As expected, Leroy Sané returns to the team after a recent groin problem, while Raphael Guerreiro is preferred to Canada's Alphonso Davies at left-back. 

Bayern Munich squad news: Upamecano suspended, Sané returns

Centre-back Dayot Upamecano is suspended after being sent off in the first leg in Rome. Winger Kingsley Coman is the other main absentee because of a hamstring problem, with Sacha Boey, Noussair Mazraoui, Tarek Buchmann and Bouna Sarr also out.

Serge Gnabry is only fit enough for a place on the bench but fellow attacker Leroy Sané returns after a groin problem.

Lazio squad news

Former Barcelona youth team defender Patric remains sidelined for Lazio, who are also without on-loan Juventus midfielder Nicolò Rovella and back-up goalkeeper Luigi Sepe.

There are plenty out there who would love the idea of going to Rome on Valentines Day. It didn’t go especially well for Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano, however. The Frenchman conceded a penalty and was sent off for a challenge on Gustav Isaksen, which Lazio talisman Ciro Immobile duly dispatched midway through the second half.

The Germans had the lion’s share of possession but lacked a cutting edge in the final third, allowing Maurizio Sarri’s side to record the biggest upset of the round so far. Or was that Porto beating Arsenal...?

Hello dear reader, and welcome to live text coverage of the second leg of the round-of-16 Champions League tie between Bayern Munich and Lazio at Allianz Arena. Can the Germans, who are in utterly dire form, overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit or will the Italian stallions complete a famous upset?
