Arne Engels Reacts to His £11m Price-tag
Arne Engels became Celtic’s club record signing on transfer deadline day, joining the Hoops for a hefty £11m from FC Augsburg in Germany.
The Hoops had to fill the void left by the departing Matt O’Riley, and Engels, along with Luke McCowan, came in late on to help do so.
The Belgian arrived at Celtic Park in the final hours of the window to seal his multi-million-pound switch.
He then made his Hoops bow in the Glasgow derby less than 48 hours later before flying out to play for Belgium after his first senior call-up.
It was a whirlwind couple of days for the 21-year-old, who is now looking to kick on following the international break.
He will look to make his mark in three consecutive upcoming home Games against Hearts, Slovan Bratislava, and Falkirk.
Engels will look to repay the faith Celtic showed in him with the price they paid for his services.
Although they haven’t spent any more on a player in the past, he doesn’t feel any added constraint as a result.
The Belgian was asked if his £11m price tag brings with it extra pressure.
“No, I just want to enjoy my Football,” he said (Celtic FC on YouTube).
“They paid obviously a big amount for me and I want to return also a lot for the club.
“I just want to be in my best form here and just perform like I always do.
“It’s just for me to adapt now quickly to the situation, to the team, but it’s an amazing team.”
Seeing how Engels develops throughout his time in Glasgow should be intriguing.
He already has experience at an elite level in Germany but was attracted to Celtic because of the club’s size and capacity to win silverware consistently.
Engels has his head screwed on, and Rodgers will be confident of getting the best out of his talents.
