The Los Angeles Lakers’ decision to hire J.J. Redick to be the team’s next head coach marks a big change for the franchise.

Whereas around the league L.A. had developed a reputation for being a bit “old school” and behind on the times, Redick brings a new age, analytics-focused approach to the equation.

Redick has spoken at length about the role data will play in his decision-making. But not everyone on board.

This week, Anthony Davis gave his thoughts.

“I don’t even know what some of that stuff means,” Davis said.

“That doesn’t matter to me. What matters is we have more points than the other team at the end of the Game. That’s all I care about… It doesn’t even matter. It has no importance to me whatsoever. I don’t care about numbers, numbers aren’t anything. You could average 50, but be in last place. You get nothing for that.”

One of the biggest and most difficult challenges new coaches face is getting buy-in from players.

Davis’ recent comments are clear proof of that.

Will Redick be able to get guys to buy into his philosophy going forward? Time will tell.
