Amazon announces: Providence student wins $40K scholarship & Amazon internship
Editor’s Note: Fridays can be a fast paced “news dump” day of negative news or happenings – or a slow, nothing happening day. How delighted we were to receive this announcement from Amazon’s New England public relations office! We share in its entirety and extend our congratulations to Angel and his family – and The Met.
“I am excited to share that a local student from The Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center in Providence has been awarded an Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship, including a $40,000 scholarship to study computer Science or engineering at a university of their choosing AND a paid internship at Amazon after their freshman year of college.
Angel Feliz is one of 400 high school seniors from underserved communities across the country who will receive this scholarship.
Please find photos of Angel and an amazing video of him being surprised with the news:
Angel’s Story:
Angel Feliz moved from the Dominican Republic to Providence when he was 9 years old. This year, when he called his mom to tell her he had been awarded the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship, he was so emotional, he could barely get out the words.
“I’m a first-generation immigrant,” Feliz said. “This scholarship means that I will soon also be a first-generation college student and can continue exploring pathways in Technology without placing a financial burden on me and my family. It also helps me feel motivated. It is important to me to know that I have people supporting me along the way.”
Angel loves the collaboration that his computer science work has offered to date, which counters the perception of independent, siloed work environments that many have of the field. Angel plans to attend college in the northeast and major in computer science with a minor in cybersecurity.
This year’s winners were chosen among thousands of applicants and include:
- 3 students from Rhode Island
- More than 70% of scholarship recipients identify as Black, Latinx, and Native American (BLNA)
- 50% identify as a woman or nonbinary
All Scholarship Recipients were chosen based on a variety of criteria, including their academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community activities, work experience, future goals, and financial need. Please find more details about the 2023 Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship recipients on About Amazon and reach out with any questions.
