Ally McCoist can’t believe the ‘extreme’ Celtic question Jeff Stelling just asked him
With the title race hotting up and Celtic still sitting three points clear at the top of the table, the fans will take any favours from any club if it means Rangers dropped points.
With the Glasgow Derby approaching, having a Healthier lead over our rivals heading into that Game would take the pressure off Celtic and give them the opportunity to stretch the lead or even win the title at Parkhead.
But what if it wasn’t Rangers who were challenging Celtic? What if it was Aberdeen who were running us close and we needed the Ibrox club to beat them?
Would Celtic fans want Rangers to win or cheer them on?
That’s the question that was posed to Ally McCoist this morning as talk around the English Premiership title race centres around teams like Tottenham doing Arsenal a favour.
McCoist would ‘grudgingly’ accept Celtic’s help
On talkSPORT this morning, Jeff Stelling tested McCoist with that very question about Celtic and it left the former Rangers man stunned:
Stelling: “So Ally, if a Celtic win could actually somehow benefit Rangers, Would you cheer them on?”
McCoist: “Did you ask me if I would cheer them on? Yeah. No, I don’t think I would cheer them on.”
Stelling: “But you would grudgingly, secretly want them to win.”
McCoist: “I would grudgingly accept a victory but I don’t know if I would secretly cheer them on. That’s, perhaps, taking it to the extreme.”
To be honest, I don’t think there is any scenario where I would actively cheer on Rangers at anything. As a lifelong Celtic supporter it’s in me, and all of us, to cheer on anyone playing against the Ibrox club.
But, and it’s a big but, if say Aberdeen where ahead by three points and they went to Ibrox on the final day, would the Celtic supporters want Rangers to win if it meant winning the title?
I’ll leave that one with you all to ponder.
