For well over a decade, Alabama was on top of the college football world. And that dominance has only increased in the College Football Playoff era, as the Crimson Tide have captured 3 titles between the 2015 and 2020 seasons. Nick Saban has long since established himself as one of the best football coaches of all time and his presence on the sideline still commands respect. However, it’s clear that Alabama is no longer the biggest bully on the block anymore, and it started with Georgia knocking off Bryce Young and company in the 2021 National Championship Game. Will this be the year that Alabama gets back to the top of the mountain, or will the Crimson Tide fall short for the third consecutive season? Let’s get into my best bets.

Alabama Crimson Tide 2022 Season Recap

The 2022 season was one of small margins for Alabama. The Crimson Tide got off to a shaky start with a battle against Texas in Week 2, and that was a sign of things to come for the remainder of the campaign. Alabama would subsequently struggle against Texas A&M a few weeks later, needing a late goal-line stand to secure a 24-20 victory. Just one week later, the Crimson Tide lost at the hands of the Tennessee Volunteers in an instant classic. Three weeks later, Alabama’s hopes of making the College Football Playoff were derailed in a 32-31 overtime loss to LSU in what was also one of the best games of the season. It was a rare instance of Alabama looking mortal against inferior competition, a sight we’re certainly not used to seeing. Let’s get into my best bet for this season.

Alabama Crimson Tide 2023 College Football Season Outlook

As my colleague Sam Avellone pointed out in his SEC preview, one could find a number of red flags with Alabama heading into this season. The Crimson Tide are used to being the top dogs in the SEC and across the nation, but Georgia has stolen a lot of their shine over the last 2 seasons. Additionally, Saban had to replace his offense coordinator and defensive coordinator in the offseason, in addition to losing Bryce Young, Jahmyr Gibbs and Will Anderson from a loaded team that only went 10-2 a season ago. The floor for Alabama historically is 10 wins, but we’ll see how the underwhelming coordinator hires and this amount of roster turnover impacts Saban’s bunch against elite competition.

Best Bet: Alabama Crimson Tide under 10.5 wins (-150)

Odds available at Caesars Sportsbook at time of publishing.

With a win total of 10.5 and entering the season as the SEC West favorite once again, it’s hard to see how Alabama isn’t being overvalued in the market based on pedigree and past performance. This is the biggest question mark Alabama has had at quarterback in years and this is also the toughest schedule that the Crimson Tide have seen in a while, including matchups against Texas, Ole Miss, LSU, Tennessee, Kentucky and Texas A&M. While the Tide are fortunate in that most of those games are at home, it’s still difficult to imagine Alabama surviving the rigors of their schedule and coming out with just 1 loss. I’m bullish on LSU as well, so I think betting the Tigers at +200 to win the SEC West is also a good way to fade the Crimson Tide if you want to avoid the juice.
