Aberdeen left-back Jack Mackenzie has been compared to former Celtic left-back and fan favourite Kieran Tierney.

The Real Sociedad man is up there with world superstar Andy Robertson and Aston Villa captain John McGinn in terms of being one of the best players in the Scotland national team.

At Celtic, Tierney excelled. He initially came through under Ronny Deila but Brendan Rodgers played a critical role in his development.

The current gaffer got the best out of his talents and one wonders where his career would be now if it weren’t for injuries.

Despite fitness concerns, there is no doubting the 26-year-old’s abilities. Tierney has been one of the best products of the Celtic Academy in recent years and arguably, the Hoops have not yet found a replacement who is of the same level as the Treble Treble winner.

Greg Taylor has played at left-back for the Hoops over the last three seasons but Mackenzie, who has emerged through the ranks at Pittodrie, has been compared to Tierney by the Dons’ interim boss Peter Leven.

He said: [Football Scotland] “Jack has done really well this year. He has come on leaps and bounds and really impressed me.

“I said to him he has the attributes, that Tierney thing about him, where he can drive forward powerfully on his left foot.”

In the Scottish Cup semi-final a week and a half ago, MacKenzie did catch the eye for Aberdeen.

This is the 23-year-old’s first season of being a consistent starter for his team and while he has impressed, he has not quite reached the level of Tierney yet.
