October is gearing up to be a busy month for art. The month kicked off with Fine Art Asia 2024, followed by the upcoming Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo and the WHATZ Art Curators Fair. But that’s not all there is — plenty of galleries are also hosting their own shows across the city. Check out these 7 must-see art exhibitions happening in Hong Kong this October 2024.

The month started strong with Fine Art Asia 2024. We’re also set to welcome the debut of the WHATZ Art Curators Fair in just a few days. After exploring the fairs, don’t forget to check out the other art exhibitions across Hong Kong this October 2024. This time, the exhibitions in Hong Kong are all about examining the human experience. Narcissism, consumption, and violence — how do we navigate and interact with them? And in the end, what does it all really mean? The audience is encouraged to ponder on these questions as they observe the artwork. Perhaps, by the end of it, you too will find your own answer. Don’t miss out on these art exhibitions in Hong Kong this October 2024.

Humanity has always been narcissistic and obsessed with immortalising ourselves. Young Soy Gallery invites local Hong Kong artists Mr. Koo, Louie Jaubere, Jerome Leung, and Sai Pradhan as well as international artist Jake Scharbach to challenge the tradition of portrait-making in the group exhibition Unmasked. Instead, the artists use portraiture to mirror societal conditions and emotions. Viewers are urged to take off and see beyond the masks we put up while reflecting on the complexity of the human condition.

In the seductive allure of liquor ads, alcohol is always the answer. Puerto Rican-American artist Enoc Perez explores the deceptive promises of alcohol and consumer culture through paintings of Bacardi rum, Moutai baijiu, and half-empty cocktail glasses. With his innovative technique, the blurry and smudged textures of the works exude a sense of wistfulness, longing, and nostalgia. Altogether, the paintings tell a story of the artist’s journey of temptation, consumption, addiction, and, finally, sobriety.

Hong Kong-based Italian artist Gianluca Crudele is presenting his second solo exhibition with Square Street Gallery. ECHO explores the Roman myth of Narcissus and Echo. In the story, the mountain nymph Echo falls in love with Narcissus, who rejects her and falls in love with his own reflection instead. With his brush, Crudele re-interprets the story in this examination of language, disembodiment, and the dissonance of choice.
