10 Best Countries to Visit in December
Whilst most of us think of winter as a time to hide away at home, these spectacular winter destinations will convince you otherwise.
Whether you’re looking for some time away to relax and rejuvenate, a hot destination to escape the bitter cold, or vibrant Christmas Markets and breathtaking ski slopes – December has it all!
From the beaches of Brazil to winter safaris in Tanzania, soak away your winter blues with a majestic trip to one of these tantalizing countries. So let’s dive in, and inspire you to Travel somewhere new this winter.
Tanzania
This stunning country in the heart of East Africa is full of wild landscapes, remarkable cultural diversity, and some of the world’s most spectacular wildlife.
If you want to take on a real challenge, why not spend Christmas day hiking Mount Kilimanjaro?
It’s the highest peak in the world, rising up to 5,895 meters. December is also one of the best times to go, as the weather tends to be warm and dry.
Not up for an immense climb? Then go on a safari tour! Tanzania is home to the Serengeti National Park and the ancient Ngorongoro crater. It’s thought that there are more than 400 different maMMAl species in Tanzania, making it ideal for safaris.
Austria
Austria gets cold and frosty in December, attracting people to the country’s relaxing and luxurious thermal baths. Like the Linsberg Asia which also boasts a sauna!
Of course, you can’t go to Austria without going to Vienna. The city really comes alive in December when all the markets are in full swing. Make sure you try some traditional spicy gluhwein wine and warm rum punsch!
The country is also home to some of the best ski resorts in the world, like St. Anton, nestled in the breathtaking Austrian Alps.
Mozambique
Without a doubt the highlight of Mozambique is its stretches of pristine coastline. Unlike many parts of the world, Mozambique is warm and mostly dry (with some unexpected storms) in December. This makes it the perfect exotic winter escape.
One of the top things to do is scuba diving on Bazaruto Island or snorkeling with Whale Sharks off the coast of Tofo.
If you’re not a huge fan of the sand and sea, then opt for a safari in Gorongosa National Park instead. All sorts of giant maMMAls await you!
Brazil
Brazil is one of the most vibrant countries in the world, and a perfect destination for beaches. Locals are extremely friendly, and it’s such a big country that you hardly notice other tourists.
December boasts warm weather, though I’d recommend bringing a raincoat because Brazil is known for its tropical downpours. You can laze on the iconic Copacabana Beach and enjoy a rum caipirinha cocktail in the winter sun.
Whilst Brazil is perfect for beaches they can be busy. If you want to get off the beaten track, head to the picturesque town Ouro Preto in Minas de Gerais. Another option is a river cruise through the Amazon.
Panama
Panama has a little something for everyone. Dotted with idyllic colonial towns and cities, rugged mountains, epic waves, and a unique culture that comes alive during the Diablos and Congos Festival.
December is the start of the dry season, ideal for exploring. Looking for world-renowned waves? Head to Santa Catalina for some winter surf.
If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, explore the plazas and historic sites dotted around the capital’s Casco Viejo neighborhood.
Take a climb to the top of the Baru Volcano, the only place in the world where (on clear days) you can see the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans at once.
Estonia
Looking for a fairytale Christmas? Then head to Estonia and marvel at the country’s snow-topped mountains, enchanting forests, and frozen lakes.
Head to Tallin and soak up this medieval town’s winter charm at its famous Christmas Market in the heart of the city.
The twinkling lights and festive atmosphere are second to none, but offer the perk of fewer tourists than other winter destinations.
If you’re looking for a unique adventure, the sleddog tours in Jarvselja and Peipsiveere Nature Reserve are a must!
Australia
Fancy doing something unique this winter, then Christmas in Australia is a no-brainer. Families come together to celebrate Christmas on the beach or over a family BBQ.
Bondi Beach in Sydney and Whitehaven Beach are some of the more popular names out there when it comes to Australia’s coastline.
For a truly memorable winter trip, you could also go diving in the Great Barrier Reef (remember to book this far in advance!).
Not a fan of the sea? Then visit the stunning Kakadu National Park or pay homage to the country’s indigenous population at the ancient sacred sandstone of Uluru.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s weather varies from region to region. December is a great time to visit the beaches along the south and west coasts where it’s dry.
Hikkaduwa and Mirissa are two idyllic coastal resorts that get a lot of visitors during the winter months. Mostly thanks to their sunny weather and amazing surfing conditions.
You can mix up your trip with some escapes into the cooler and wetter highlands to visit ancient cities. Sigiriya which peeks out over the surrounding jungle and offers a glimpse into the ancient Kassapa kingdom. Or trek to the outskirts of Anuradhapura to the old ruins of a sacred Buddhist site.
Thailand
Because of the glorious weather and vibrant Christmas and New Year celebrations, Thailand is quite busy during December. But don’t let the crowds put you off – there’s a reason everyone’s there!
The country’s southern beaches and islands, like Koh Samui, Krabi, and Phuket offer white sandy beaches and cool seas that will brighten your winter.
Meanwhile, on the mainland, the mesmerizing and enchanting Loi Krathong Festival, or Festival of Lights, is sometimes celebrated in early December. Whilst just north of Bangkok the Lopburi Monkey banquet takes place in honor of the local macaque monkeys.
Germany
Frosty and cold, Germany will enchant you. It offers snow-topped Bavarian Alps, idyllic rural destinations like Rothenburg, and wellness escapes in the enchanting Elmau Valley.
For the more adventurous souls, sledding trips in the mountains beckon you to Blomberg or to the miles of ski slopes in Zugspitze.
Meanwhile, those looking to relax and soak away their winter blues should head to Baden-Baden. It beckons with rejuvenating springs.
All that said, one of the most majestic things to do in Germany in December is to walk around the Nuremberg Christmas Market. It still holds the title of the oldest Christmas Market in the world!
