Will Brendan Rodgers Reward Celtic Star’s Mid-week Cameo?
As Celtic travel to Kilmarnock this weekend, one of the question lingering is whether Hyunjun Yang will see more playing time.
Over the past few weeks, the young winger has been gradually introduced into Brendan Rodgers’ plans, showing glimpses of promise that suggest he could play a bigger role for the club.
He’s been an outcast since he arrived at the club last summer but it’s been clear that he could be a rough diamond.
Yang’s development under Rodgers is no surprise. The manager’s knack for nurturing talent is well-known, and Yang’s potential is clear for anyone who’s watched him play recently.
Take, for example, his performance against RB Leipzig in the Champions League. When he came off the bench, he looked electric—his passages of play were fast, sharp, and direct, posing real problems for Leipzig’s defence. His movement off the ball and willingness to take on defenders hinted at a player who is ready to step up when called upon.
It’s clear that Rodgers sees something in Yang, as evidenced by his choice to bring him on in key moments. His decision to sub Yang on ahead of seasoned player James Forrest during the match against Atalanta, when the Game was poised at 0-0, speaks volumes I think.
It showed trust in Yang’s ability to contribute at a high level, even in pressure situations.
Of course, regular minutes are vital for any player’s growth, and while Yang has been getting Game time sporadically, a consistent run could help him establish himself further.
Rodgers’ approach so far has been measured, giving Yang a taste of the action without overwhelming him. This method is wise; it ensures the player adapts steadily while building his confidence.
The match against Kilmarnock might be the perfect opportunity for Yang to make a bigger impact. With the international break following the Game, Rodgers is unlikely to make drastic changes to his starting lineup. However, given Yang’s recent form and the spark he brings when introduced, it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s given more minutes on Sunday.
His pace, directness, and sharp passing provide a fresh dimension that can unlock stubborn defences, and he’s shown he can rise to the occasion when needed.
For me, he’s earned the right to see more of the pitch.
