Why isn’t Rashee Rice playing for the Chiefs against the Saints? NFL Week 5 injury status
As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for a key Monday night showdown against the New Orleans Saints, they are dealing with major uncertainty surrounding rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice. The young standout is set to undergo a knee procedure early this week, which could keep him sidelined for a significant portion of the season or, worse, potentially the entire year.
What are the updates on Rashee Rice’s injury?
According to the renowned NFL insider, Ian Rappaport, Rice is scheduled to meet with renowned surgeon Dr. Dan Cooper, the Dallas Cowboys team doctor, to address a knee issue that has raised concerns within the organization. The procedure, which will be done arthroscopically, will provide clarity on the severity of the injury.
There are several outcomes on the table: if Rice’s knee is relatively stable, he could miss four to six weeks. However, if there is more extensive damage, particularly to the PCL or LCL, the recovery time could extend to four months. In the worst-case scenario, if ACL damage is detected, Rashee Rice may require reconstructive surgery, potentially sidelining him for nine months.
It’s uncertain whether Rice will return this season, but it’s not very likely. His absence would be a big blow to the Chiefs’ receiving group, which is already trying to find its groove as Patrick Mahomes leads Kansas City’s offense.
Considering this, the Chiefs might explore trade options to strengthen their wide receiver depth. DeAndre Hopkins of the Tennessee Titans is a name to watch, as the Chiefs had discussions with him before he signed with Tennessee this past offseason. While Hopkins comes with a high price tag, the Chiefs have shown they are willing to make bold moves when necessary.
Another option is for the Chiefs to choose a more cost-effective solution, similar to when they brought in JuJu Smith-Schuster. Kansas City is known for being innovative and daring in its roster decisions, so with Rice potentially out for a while, the front office may look to bolster the receiver group sooner rather than later.
