Real Madrid have been the dominant force in the Champions League for the last decade but Carlo Ancelotti’s team haven’t been having things all their own way of late, suffering back-to-back defeats at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu to bitter rivals Barcelona in El Clásico and AC Milan in the UCL.

To some, that is enough for Los Blancos to be in a (mini) crisis. For others, that assessment will only be confirmed should they suffer a third successive loss at the hands of Osasuna on Saturday.

Of course, it isn’t often a club of Real Madrid’s stature is beaten in three consecutive Games. That said, we don’t have to go back all that far for the last time it happened. And, curiously, Los Merengues’ most recent trio of straight defeats also all came at the Bernabéu, which few would expect.

The last time Real Madrid lost three successive games

On February 27 2019, Santiago Solari’s Madrid were beaten 3-0 by Barcelona in the second leg of the semifinals of the Copa del Rey, which saw them eliminated from the comPetition after a 1-1 draw in Catalonia.

There days later, they suffered another defeat to Barça in the capital, with Ivan Rakitic scoring the only goal of the LaLiga clash as Ernesto Valverde’s team went on to win the title and finish 19 points clear of Los Blancos.

Madrid were then thrashed 4-1 by Ajax in the Champions League round of 16 on March 5, all the more shocking given they had won the first leg of the tie 2-1 in Amsterdam. That ensured a 5-3 aggregate defeat and ended their hopes of winning a fourth successive UCL title.

Solari was fired as head coach less than a week later and replaced by the returning Zinedine Zidane, who won his second LaLiga championship as manager the following season.
