While the announcement that he won’t participate in the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters comes as a bit of a shock, it’s not entirely surprising when considering the extended period of silence that came from Nadal’s camp in the lead up to the tournament.

Nadal’s name is synonymous with Monte Carlo

Indeed it is. After missing Indian Wells it was expected that the 14-time French Open winner would continue preparing for this year’s version of the tournament that he is best known for, even more so after what appeared to a be a solid performance against his countryman, Carlos Alcaraz, in the inaugural Netflix Slam last month. Sadly, the Spaniard’s participation at Roland Garros this year now seems to be in real doubt after he confirmed on Thursday that he would not be participating at the Monte Carlo Masters.

This of course is a blow not just to Nadal but the tournament itself when it begins next week, in that he has won at Monte Carlo on 11 occasions. As one can imagine, the situation has had a real effect on the mentality of the 37-year-old who lamented in his statement, saying “My body simply won’t let me.” To date, Nadal has only played in four comPetitive matches this year - In Brisbane - before he pulled out of the Australian Open and then reappeared in the above mentioned match against his compatriot.

At this point it remains unclear as to whether Nadal will play in the French Open, but as his favorite tournament and the one he has won a record number of times, we can only assume that the legendary clay court player will be doing everything he can to be present. “You have no idea how hard this is for me to not be able to play these events,” he wrote. “The only thing I can do is to accept the situation and try to look at the immediate future keeping the excitement and will to play in order to give me a chance for things to get better.” The Roland Garros tournament will begin on May 25th.
