With around eight months to go until the 2024 European Championship get underway in Germany, UEFA have confirmed the hosts of the 2028 and 2032 editions of the tournament. To the surprise of absolutely nobody, the first of the two will be played across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, while Italy and Turkey will team up together four years later.

Euro 2028 and 2032 hosts win unchallenged

Both bids won unchallenged, with Turkey abandoning their application to host Euro 2028 alone as recently as last Wednesday, opting to focus instead of 2032. Turkey and Italy had originally applied to host the latter tournament separately but requested to join forces in July this year, with the sole Italian bid requiring a significant amount of work in terms of stadium redevelopment and infrastructure.

Where will Euro 2028 be played?

Matches at the 2028 edition will be held in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, with 10 stadiums having been put forward as part of the bid, six of which are in England.

Proposed host stadiums for Euro 2028

England

  • Wembley Stadium, London
  • Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London
  • Everton Stadium, Liverpool (not yet built)
  • Villa Park, Birmingham
  • City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester
  • St James' Park, Newcastle

Scotland

  • Hampden Park, Glasgow

Wales

  • Millennium Stadium, Cardiff

Northern Ireland

  • Casement Park, Belfast (to be redeveloped)

Republic of Ireland

  • Aviva Stadium, Dublin

It is expected that the final take place at Wembley Stadium in London, which has already hosted finals in 1996 and 2021 (Euro 2020 was delayed by a year due to the covid-19 pandemic).

Plans for the 2032 tournament much are unsurprisingly further behind, with Italy and Turkey expected to choose 10 host venues, likely five in each country, by October 2026.

Which countries have co-hosted the European Championship?

Co-hosting has become increasingly common in recent years, largely thanks to the expansion from the tournament, which started off with just four participants in 1960 but has 24 in its current format.

The first 10 editions were held in a single country but Belgium and the Netherlands (2000), Austria and Switzerland (2008), and Poland and Ukraine (2012) have all co-hosted since the turn of the millennium. The pan-European Euro 2020 was held in 11 cities in 11 countries, including England, Scotland, Italy and Turkey.

Which countries have hosted the Euros most often?

Not counting that tournament, which was an anomaly, Italy will become the second country after France (1960, 1984, 2016) to host the European Championship three times, having done so alone in 1968 and 1980.

England (1996), meanwhile, will join Belgium (1972 and 2000, with the Netherlands) and Germany (1988 as West Germany, 2024) in hosting its second Euros.

Unlike Scotland and Turkey, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland weren’t involved in hosting Euro 2020, which means they will be hosting games at the tournament for the first time.
