The P Diddy Controversy Has Sparked Baby Oil Memes on Social Media
In the wake of his September 16 arrest and indictment, embattled music mogul P Diddy is now facing public derision in the form of memes on social media.
First things first, let’s get one thing straight: There is nothing funny about the crimes that P Diddy has been accused of. From charges of sex trafficking to racketeering, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ alleged misdeeds have captured the internet since his September 16 arrest, leading to the rampant proliferation of conspiracy theories and speculations alike.
With over a hundred upcoming lawsuits from alleged victims to look forward to, Diddy is set to face the consequences of his actions — but not all of them will be dealt with in the courthouse. Across numerous social platforms, memes have surfaced to mock the embattled star, poking fun at every last known facet of his federal grand jury indictment from baby oil to ‘freak-offs’.
If there’s one thing you can count on the internet to do, it’s to take an unfortunate situation and laugh at it.
Not all memes
While the memes surrounding the P Diddy controversy have since spread across social media like wildfire, a sentiment of unease has likewise suffused the scene. A collective of netizens have emerged to decry the jokes and memes, some of which mock the basic tenets of public decency and justice. The consensus among these netizens is that caution and care are necessary to avoid causing pain amongst victims of abuse, whether they suffered it at the hands of Diddy or not.
And they’re right. Not all memes are funny, nor all subjects meant for light-hearted humour. Nevertheless, in the face of public reckoning and legal ramifications, Diddy and his Celebrity friends are now the unwitting subjects of internet scorn, and the forecast for reprieve is not encouraging. Among the staunchest of meme makers, few have been as vocal as rapper 50 Cent.
50 Cent leads the charge
To the victor go the spoils, and the winner in Diddy’s arrest is none other than his longtime rival and chief critic, fellow rapper 50 Cent. When news first broke of Diddy’s homes being raided in March of this year, 50 Cent was among the first to take shots by posting a meme on Instagram. This comes as little surprise; over the years, 50 Cent has taken centre stage as one of the most outspoken critics of Diddy.
The trend first began in 2006 when 50 Cent released his first diss track aimed at Diddy. Featuring the sound of gunshots, “The Bomb” appeared to reference the murder of Christopher Wallace (a.k.a The Notorious B.I.G.), once protégée and best friend to Diddy himself. In yet another song “Hip Hop”, 50 Cent distinctly referenced Diddy’s now-infamous ‘white parties’, rapping, “Oh I guess this means / I won’t be invited to the white parties / In the Hamptons.”
Since then, 50 Cent has been relentless in his trolling of Diddy, even going so far as to insinuate Jay-Z’s involvement in Diddy’s enterprise by posting a tongue-in-cheek photo to Instagram. The picture, which featured a photo of a milk carton bearing the word ‘Missing’ along with an image of Jay-Z was accompanied by a caption that read, “Anybody seen Jay LOL”.

The internet has clearly taken its cues from 50 Cent, with memes erupting on social media in mockery of Diddy’s alleged crimes and all they entail — notably, the authorities’ claim that 1,000 bottles of baby oil were found in Diddy’s homes during raids. We take a look at some of the most cutting entries to date.
