Where to luxuriate
Shangri-La Singapore
Shangri-La Singapore is the progenitor of the pioneer luxury chain and sets the trend for Asian hospitality on so many fronts. It is probably the first garden hotel in Singapore (it still maintains its tropical landscape with aplomb) and just steps from Orchard Road, the behemoth property has emerged refreshed after an extensive renovation in 2019 that relegated most of the dated crystal chandeliers of yore to the brand’s distant memory. Comprising three wings and nestled in an exclusive green enclave, Shangri-La Singapore is still a soothing haven that keeps out the urban realities of the city outside its verdant fold.

Conrad Orchard
For many years the property was the Regent Singapore, and was best known for its Portman-designed atrium and many restaurants and bars. Recently renovated and rebranded as the Conrad Orchard, the property boasts new rooms and suites that are spacious and bright, a comforting departure from the dark and moody tones many other Conrads are bathed in. The restaurants and bars are still fabulous and being on its end of Orchard sets the hotel in a more elevated sphere, an exclusive hideaway that still is on Orchard Road but somewhat removed from the hubbub.

Pan Pacific Orchard
One of the newest luxury-class hotels raised around the Orchard Road belt, Singapore’s second Pan Pacific is a bold departure from conventions — the striking green building is erected with magnificent floral columns and lush sky gardens, presenting a mirage of a sky oasis marking an otherwise inconspicuous spot of Orchard Road. The rooms are small granted, but the views are gratifying to say the least. This marks a new beginning of the Singapore hospitality brand, a Pan Pacific hotel that is also a bona fide leisure destination.

Pullman Singapore Orchard
A fixture at the heart of Orchard for decades, there were evolving incarnations of this location landmark in recent years and we are glad with its current turn. As the Pullman Orchard, the property has finally undergone the chrysalis it deserves, emerging as a modish bright thing that sets the mood at one of the retail belt’s most significant junctions. Because it is dripping in style, Orchard does seem more stylish. The vibrantly decked rooms are comfortably plush and the best of them come with awesome views of the locale.

Combining style with convenience, all the rooms come with microwave ovens and the COMO Suites have induction cookers that long-stay guests would appreciate. On the retail front, a Club 21 space carrying labels from Alaia to Thom Browne is anchored here right next to pastry whizz Cedric Grolet’s first patisserie in Asia.

Hilton Singapore Orchard
Another original Orchard Road fixture through the decades, Hilton took over the operations of this behemoth property in 2022 with spanking new interiors spanning all 36 floors and 1080 guest rooms. An upwards extension of a plush shopping gallery with enviable street frontage, nothing quite defines a shopping escapade in the Lion City like a stay at the Hilton Singapore, a renewed Orchard Road original that is quite the veritable portal to grand retail therapy and a sense of History.

Eden Restaurant
Named Eden for its bright and tropical milieu, this hip and welcoming space is situated within Pullman Singapore Orchard. It’s appointed right at the crossroad of Singapore’s most famous shopping junction and also serves up a crossroad of differing flavours — east and west to be exact. A sitting here will have one foraging through a menu harbouring entrees like Hae Bee Hiam (spicy dried shrimp) Australian Lamb Rack and Hainanese Mac and Cheese. It is hard not to falter within such ambitious constructs but somehow the culinary team at Eden is fairly successful in their attempts, with its Laksa Lobster Bisque and Hokkien Mee Fettuccine rather delightful amalgamations with all the right ticks in flavours and techniques.

Ginger Lily
Perched prettily above the shopping stretch of Orchard Road, Ginger Lily at Hilton Singapore Orchard exudes sweetness in the afternoon with dainty confections and smoulders in the evenings with dangerous concoctions. It is a spot that transitions deftly from day to night, but always welcoming whether it is cakes or cocktails one craves. A botanical inspired joint, floral themes are ever-present, whether they are infused into the beverages or crafted onto cakes. No wonder the popularity of its Nikkei-inspired afternoon tea, so rich with delicate natural flavours, is consistently high and often booked way in advance.

Florette
Relatively new, Florette at Pan Pacific Orchard is the secret drinking hole of the Traveller in the know, an inspired champagne and oyster bar tucked furtively away from Orchard Road’s main artery, eliciting a swanky set drawn by the promise of alluring concoctions and exclusive milieu. Serving tea at noon and cocktails at sunset, there is a grand abundance of designer drinks inspired by nature here crafted from the thematic premises of Root, Shoot, Flower and Fruit, which are pretty much the most innovative libations flowing from this neck of the woods currently.

Cedric Grolet
Cedric Grolet is one of France’s most decorated pastry chefs and for his first opening in Asia, he has adroitly tied it to Christina Ong’s first COMO outing in Singapore, right in the heart of Orchard. The opening was as sensational as Grolet’s exquisite confections with queues that started from the minute the shop opened till the moment it closed. Six months on, the queues may have eased up but within the style sanctuary that is COMO Metropolitan Singapore, this is still where the ladies who shop and lunch congregate to see and be seen.
