Khanyisa, the orphaned albino elephant calf, has found a new home at South Africa’s HERD Sanctuary, where she receives specialized care and support.

Under the guidance of Adine Roode, the baby elephant is slowly integrating into the Jabulani herd, a process filled with daily routines, love, and meticulous care.

Each morning, Khanyisa eagerly awaits the arrival of Adine, who brings her a bounty of marula fruit to enjoy.

The young elephant’s playful personality is evident as she opens her mouth, anticipating the feeding session from her favorite caretaker.

As she enjoys her morning treats, the staff at HERD Sanctuary are busy behind the scenes, preparing for her milk feeding.

Khanyisa gets her milk from two dedicated caregivers, Reply and Stavros, who ensure she has her bottles every few hours.

When Khanyisa first arrived at the sanctuary, she weighed just 124 kg. Now, she’s a growing baby elephant, weighing 520 kgs (about 1,146 pounds), showing how much she’s thriving under the sanctuary’s care.

Weighing her is no small feat, however, as Khanyisa’s excitement and size make it difficult to keep her steady on the scale.

Despite the challenges, regular weigh-ins are crucial to ensure she maintains a balanced diet and doesn’t overindulge in the extra treats she loves, like sweet potatoes and marulas.

Khanyisa’s morning routine isn’t just about eating and drinking; she also enjoys playtime with her two goat companions, Lammie and Nungu.

To supplement her nutrient intake, Khanyisa uses her trunk to break off pieces of a mineral block, providing her with essential minerals for her growth.

This behavior mimics wild elephants seeking specific soils and mud for their mineral content.

The HERD Sanctuary employs a dedicated team of caregivers, including many from Zimbabwe, who share a special bond with the elephants. They work diligently to ensure Khanyisa’s safety and comfort.

Stavros, for instance, checks her feet for any stones or debris, while others keep a watchful eye to ensure she’s happy and Healthy.

Khanyisa has become a pretty affectionate youngster. She often approaches Reply enthusiastically, demonstrating the trust and bond that has developed during her time at the sanctuary.

As she continues to grow and integrate with the Jabulani herd, it’s clear that Khanyisa has found a loving and caring home at HERD Sanctuary.
