Senators vs Blues Prediction, Picks & NHL Odds

A return to the Canadian Tire Centre is just what the doctor ordered for the Ottawa Senators, playing host to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, October 29.

Ottawa's coming off back-to-back road losses, but our Blues vs. Senators predictions and top NHL picks are calling for a strong showing and a return to the win column tonight.

While it's way too early to read too much into home-road splits, it’s pretty clear the numbers are skewed for the Ottawa Senators — and returning to Canadian Tire Centre will be welcomed following a three-game road trip that concluded with consecutive losses to the Golden Knights and Avalanche.

Ottawa is 3-1 on home ice with a middling 50.1 Corsi For percentage and 50.3 expected goals percentage at 5-on-5 compared to respective 46.5 and 44.2 basement-dwelling marks on the highway.

Additionally, it’s notable that all four of the opponents the Sens have faced at home are above 50% in both overall CF% and xGF%, so they’ve had a tough home slate to start the year.

The St. Louis Blues also head to the Canadian capital without No. 1 center Robert Thomas (ankle). It’s a big blow, considering he paced the Blues in points per 60 minutes (2.89) and plays in all situations to lead St. Louis forwards in ice time per game (20:12).

Ottawa is also missing a couple of key regulars, but I’m anticipating the Sens continuing their strong play at home and No. 1 goalie Linus Ullmark tidying up his Game.

Ullmark opened the season with a strong 31-save win over the Panthers, but he’s posted a .830 SV% and 4.71 GAA across his past two starts and also missed time while nursing a muscle strain.

With St. Louis generating just 2.46 expected goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 and ranking 25th with a 15.0 power-play percentage, this is the perfect spot for Ullmark to rebound. He posted an elite .924 SV% and 2.28 GAA with 0.58 goals saved above average per 60 over the past three seasons with the Bruins, after all.

There hasn’t been notable action on this moneyline at Pinnacle. A small move to the St. Louis side early this morning was countered with buyback on Ottawa, and I expect the Sens to remain a sizable home favorite.

This total has dropped from an opening 6.5 to 6 at Pinnacle. It’s a little surprising with Ottawa playing to the Over in four of its past six Games, but as noted, St. Louis is missing its top scorer and hasn’t been dangerous at 5-on-5 or with the man advantage.
