San Antonio Spurs Put Weird Clause In Chris Paul’s Contract

The San Antonio Spurs signed Chris Paul to one-year, $10.5 million deal this month.

Paul spurned a pretty notable title contender in order to play for Gregg Popovich and Co.

San Antonio, conversely, chose the 39-year-old over a far more spry 25-year-old option.

The union seems to work for both sides.

That said, according to Bobby Marks of ESPN, the Spurs installed a very weird clause into Paul’s deal.

Per the agreement, if Paul helps guide his team to a very arbitrary win total – he gets rewarded with a little more than a quarter of a million dollars.

“Paul has eight sets of bonuses in his contract, including a $262K incentive if the Spurs (or the team he finishes the season with) win 32 Games or more,” Marks noted.

Why 32 wins? That part is unclear. Last year San Antonio went 22-60 – the same mark they held the season prior. A 10-win bump would certainly be great, but it would almost certainly not be enough to get the Spurs into the playoffs.

While the motivation for this particular clause isn’t clear, obviously Paul and San Antonio view it as important enough to put it in writing.
