Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney react to Wrexham promotion
With a comprehensive 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers at the Racecourse Ground and other results featuring direct rivals going their way, Wrexham have secured a place in League 1 (third tier of the English football pyramid)
The achievement has marked the first time in Wrexham’s 159-year History that club have achieved successive promotions, and it’s been almost twenty years since the Red Dragons have played in the third tier of English Football.
Paul Mullin scored twice in the emphatic win against the bottom side in the division to move Wrexham to 82 points from 44 Games, ensuring their promotion with two matches to spare.
Defeats for MK Dons and Barrow meant Wrexham cannot be overhauled in the top three and will be playing in the English third tier next season for the first time since 2005.
Reynolds and McElhenney took over the club in November 2020 but missed out on promotion from the National League in their first full season, before ending a 15-year exile in non-league football in the 2022-23 campaign.
Reynolds & McElhenney celebrate
Neither of the Hollywood owners were present in North Wales to celebrate the achievement but both men took to X/Twitter to express their delight.
Reynolds stated: “A few years ago, if you told me I would be crying tears of joy over a Football match taking place in North Wales, you would be Rob McElhenney. Congrats to Wrexham and to my co-chairman in crime. Double up the town! This is the ride of our lives”.
McElhenney followed suit with a succinct: “No Words” with a heart emoji.
Wrexham’s Hollywood owners have more than doubled their investment in the League Two side. The Racecourse club say the high-profile pair increased their funding from almost $4m to $9m last season.
