Each player is vital to the team’s success, but prioritization is necessary due to budget constraints and the timing of their current contracts. CeeDee Lamb, the Cowboys’ star wide receiver, is first when it comes to the negotiations. Lamb is set to enter free agency after the 2024 season, making his contract extension the most urgent. Lamb’s performance in the 2023 season was stellar, with 135 receptions, 1,749 receiving yards, and 12 touchdowns, underscoring his critical role in the Cowboys’ offense.

Next up after CeeDee is Micah Parsons, the Cowboys’ best defender. Parsons still has two years remaining on his rookie contract, which allows the Cowboys some breathing room in terms of timing. Parsons has consistently demonstrated his value with 14 sacks and 64 combined tackles in the 2023 season.

Dak Prescott: The Quarterback Conundrum

Dak Prescott, the team’s leader and quarterback, presents a more complex scenario. Prescott’s current contract, worth $160 million over four years, is set to expire after the 2024 season. While Prescott’s role is undeniably, the financial implications of his extension pose a significant challenge.

Prescott’s performance in the 2023 season, where he led the NFL with 36 passing touchdowns and posted a career-best passer rating of 105.9, highlights his value. However, he hasn’t been able to make that extra step and reach the Super Bowl with the team. Even though Prescott has contributed significantly to the team, it hasn’t been enough, and the Cowboys may decide to postpone his extension while they explore other options.

Extending CeeDee Lamb is the immediate priority, ensuring that the offensive core remains intact. Following this, securing Micah Parsons will solidify the defensive unit, which seems to be more important than securing a QB who, for many Cowboys’ fans, hasn’t performed as well.
