Pep Guardiola’s full record against Real Madrid: wins, draws, defeats, Champions League…
Real Madrid and Manchester City come face to face in the Champions League quarter-finals, with Pep Guardiola, a Barcelona icon, once again looking to mastermind a triumph over his old rivals.
How many times has Pep Guardiola faced Real Madrid as a manager?
The 53-year-old’s battle against Los Blancos has been going on since 1991, when he appeared in his first Clásico as a player, and their paths will cross for a third successive season in Europe’s elite club competition. Madrid narrowly won two years ago before City gained their revenge by thrashing the Spaniards in last season’s semi-final.

As a manager, Guardiola has taken on Real Madrid on 23 occasions in all competitions, with the more than half of those matches coming during his four-year spell with Barcelona (2008-2012), as you’d expect. And his overall record is excellent, with 13 victories, five draws and only five defeats. In those matches, his teams have outscored Los Merengues by 47 goals to 29.
Guardiola’s famous Clásico victories
Pep oversaw some famous Clásico victories in the Barça dugout, most notably a 6-2 triumph at the Bernabéu in May 2009 and a 5-0 hammering of Madrid at Camp Nou in November 2010. Guardiola’s Barça won nine of 15 matches against their rivals, with the other Games producing four draws and two defeats.
A 2-1 defeat in the Spanish capital in April 2011 didn’t stop La Blaugrana from winning a third league title in a row under Guardiola, but a second loss by the same scoreline 12 months later was a huge factor in Real Madrid ending Barça’s LaLiga dominance in 2011/12, after which he left the club.
Barcelona and Madrid twice faced off in the Champions League during Guardiola’s tenure, with a victory at the Bernabéu followed by a draw in Catalonia sending Barça through to the 2011 final.
Contrasting fortunes with Bayern Munich and Manchester City
Guardiola’s has had several more meetings with Los Blancos in the Champions League, two with Bayern Munich and six with Manchester City.
The Germans suffered a 5-0 aggregate defeat to Carlo Ancelotti’s team in the 2013/14 semi-finals, which included an emphatic 4-0 win for the Spaniards at Allianz Arena.
Guardiola has fared rather better with City, however, which may bode well for Tuesday’s Game and the return next Wednesday. The English side won 2-1 both home and away in the 2019/20 round of 16, while the teams traded victories in the 2021/22 semi-finals, with Madrid progressing after extra time.
As mentioned, City got their own back last season, drawing 1-1 in Spain before posting an impressive 4-0 victory in the home leg, taking Guardiola’s record against Madrid during his time in England to four wins, one draw and one defeat in six meetings.
