Victor Wembanyama’s potential is one of the most polarizing topics in basketball these days.

Some veterans and retired players think he has the makings of an all-time legend.

Others disagree.

Patrick Beverley waded into the debate a few days.

“You can’t even put him in comparison with other people,” said Beverley on his podcast.

“He is the best player in the NBA next year. He’s a center who shoots 3’s and dribbles the ball… He’s positionless. It’s him, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James in that category.”

Beverley didn’t stop there, though.

“He’s not a five,” Beverley added.

“He’s everything. Like you can’t even put him in comparison with other people, he’s the best player in the NBA next year. He’s a center who shoots threes and dribbles the ball…

“Just because you’re 7’4″ doesn’t make you a center. We’re talking about guys who are centers, who come out and set screen and rolls. None of the guys that we are naming come up and shoot hesi-pull threes, maybe [Joel] Embiid a little bit but that’s it. It’s not fair for him to give him a position. He’s an alien, he’s positionless.”

Interestingly enough, just a few days earlier, Shaquille O’Neal had a very different take on Wembanyama.

“Wemby is a great player. But I don’t really think you can be dominant when you shoot jumpers a lot. I think if he was an inside player at 7’5″, the answer would be yes but when you shoot jumpers you’re always going to go up and down,” he said.

“But he’s a fine player and I wish him well. I’m just glad, after not being in the league for so long, to still have my name in that category.”

Next season will be interesting. How dominant will Wembanyama ultimately be when everything is said and done? Time will tell.
