2024 Seoul Series: Padres 3-0 Dodgers

1 out

Padres score: Sacrifice fly

Ha-Seong Kim the hitter now and he catches the corner for a strike. That is more like it!

The next pitch misses outside and then again inside and it is 2-1.

Yamamoto misses high and it is 3-1. The delivery and Kim lifts a solid fly ball to deep center field. Outman is there to put it away but Cronenworth will tag and score from third on the sac fly.

Mound visit

Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior will come out and try to settle Yamamoto down. Everything is just going too fast right now. He needs to slow this down.

walk

Manny Machado the hitter now with a runner on third and no outs. Yamamoto off to a bumpy start here.

Machado works the count full before the payoff delivery misses low. A single, a hit batter, a triple, and a walk for Yamamoto.

National Anthems

The anthems for Game 2 are performed by Baekhyun,  from the popular K-Pop group EXO. The English pronunciation wobbled a bit there, but hey! it is better than my Korean, so well done young man!

Again, as yesterday, the South Korean anthem is truly beautiful. It is called the Aegukga. Here are the translation of the lyrics into English:

1. Until that day when the waters of the East Sea run dry and Mount Baekdusan is worn away, God protect and preserve our nation; Hurray to Korea.

2. As the pine atop the near mountain stands firm, unchanged through wind and frost, as if wrapped in armor, so shall our resilient spirit.

3. The autumn sky is void and vast, high and cloudless; the bright moon is our heart, undivided and true.

4. With this spirit and this mind, give all loyalty, in suffering or in joy, to the love of country.

PITCHING

The Padres will go with Joe Musgrove, who had a blazing start last season before injury derailed him. In the end, he only threw 97.1 innings, his lowest since his rookie season. He came back just before the end of the season and has been cleared for a full off season workout, showing no ill effects through spring training so far.

The Dodgers will go with their new $325 million signing in Yoshinobu Yamamoto who was the best pitcher in Japan through seven seasons in the NPL, winning their triple crown in three consecutive seasons. He has struggled to adjust somewhat, posting an eye-watering 8.38 ERA in the Cactus League where he has had to deal with a problem where he was tipping his pitches.

WELCOME!!!

Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of Game 2 of the 2024 Seoul Series as the Padres take on the Dodgers in Seoul, South Korea at the Gocheok Sky Dome.

The 2024 MLB regular season got underway yesterday with a come-from-behind 5-2 Dodgers win that saw a little of everything. There was a smattering of small ball, far too many errors, and a big eighth inning, plus Shohei Ohtani faced ex-team mate Yu Darvish for the first time in his career, going 1 for 2 with a single and a ground out.

Both teams have a list of things that they would like to work on today. For the Dodgers, the batting is the key. They have one of the most powerful lineups in the game and could only muster ground balls and a few squib hit singles. No hit made it as far as the warning track. For any other team, that would be fine, but for a billion-dollar power puncher like the Dodgers, that has to improve.

For the Padres, the killer was errors. They had four pitch timer violations, which directly or indirectly was responsible for three of the runs that they surrendered. Without those mistakes, they surrender only five walks, still too many, but better than the nine that they wound up with.

Neither team has messed with their lineup today, fielding the same squad as yesterday. The top end of that Dodger lineup is as strong as you will see in baseball, while the young man for the Padres, Jackson Merrill showed some promise in center field and he is not bothered in the slightest by hitting at this level.

The nominal home team is the Los Angeles Dodgers.
