Let’s dive into the AFC East, which poses to be a comPetitive division with 3 of the 4 teams available at +200 odds or lower. We’ll see how Josh Allen and the Bills cope without Stefon Diggs and we might see how the Jets and Aaron Rodgers perform if Rodgers can finally complete a series. Meanwhile, the Dolphins were hot last year and look likely to improve, as the Patriots sit as rank outsiders but now have Jerod Mayo at the helm. Who will win the AFC East? Let’s take a look at the NFL odds and our expert NFL picks for the division.

Buffalo Bills (+170)

The Bills finished the 2023 regular season like a train, winning their final 5 games to win the AFC East against all odds and reach the playoffs. Among those 5 wins were victories against the Chiefs, Cowboys and Dolphins, and they nearly took down the Chiefs again in the Divisional Round. Ultimately, Buffalo has proven to be at its best when its back is against the wall, but has the window of opportunity closed for Sean McDermott and Josh Allen?

Following the departures of Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, there is a lot of pressure on this franchise to prove the doubters wrong and that they can still win a championship. Allen will likely still be a serious threat through the air and on the ground, but it awaits to be seen whether someone can replicate Diggs’ output and if rookie Keon Coleman can deliver on his potential. I expect the Bills to still be good, but will good be good enough in this division? I’m not so sure.

New York Jets (+180)

It’s take two for the Aaron Rodgers Jets era, after the future Hall of Famer was ruled out for the season in his first drive in a Jets uniform against the Bills last season. Despite the Jets’ offense looking woeful from that point onwards, their defense was arguably the best in the country, consistently keeping the team in games despite constant three-and-outs. If Rodgers can indeed deliver then this New York team could be the real deal. He has old pal Allen Lazard out wide along with stud receiver Garrett Wilson and deep threat Mike Williams. Of course, he has star running back Breece Hall behind him and a new-look offensive line that should give him tons of protection.

The majority of the Jets’ top defensive players remain, such as Sauce Gardner, CJ Mosley and Quinnen Williams, and if they can figure out this Haason Reddick contract situation then this unit could be even better than last year. It’s been more than a decade of misery for the Gang Green faithful, but this could finally be the year they put it all together and make a run.

Miami Dolphins (+200)

The Dolphins were fantastic to watch last season and boast one of the most explosive offenses in the league. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle make up one of the most ferocious receiving tandems in the league, while out of the backfield they have a vicious 1-2 punch in Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane. There were a lot of fresh pieces to this team in 2023 and Tua Tagovailoa was able to bring it all together. While Miami did have its struggles against the better teams in the league and was eventually eliminated by the Chiefs in the Wild Card round in one of the coldest games ever, there’s every reason to believe that this team will be even better after having time to gel.

Their additions over the summer have been very eyecatching, particularly Marcus Maye and Odell Beckham, and Mike McDaniel’s coaching has been a breath of fresh air in the NFL. Miami went 11-6 last year and with a stacked offense and defense that can do its job, they should be able to at least come close to replicating that this season.

Miami Dolphins best bet: Dolphins over 9.5 wins (-122)

New England Patriots (+2800)

The Bill Belichick era is officially over in New England, and Jerod Mayo has a full rebuild on his hands as we officially usher in a new time in Patriots history. It’s fair to say that it’ll be a miracle if New England isn’t in the cellar of the AFC East at the end of the season, but that’s more because of how high the potential is for the other teams than their own shortcomings. Jacoby Brissett should be a serviceable signal-caller for the start of the season before we eventually see Drake Maye take over, and that should at least give an injection of adrenaline to this team. The backfield is solid with Rhamondre Stevenson and now ex-Commander Antonio Gibson joining the fold, and new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt should be able to generate some excitement.

New England Patriots best bet: Patriots exactly 5 wins (+350)

AFC East Best Bet: New York Jets to win AFC East (+180)

The Jets haven’t reached the playoffs since the 2010 season and haven’t won the AFC East since 2002, but both of those droughts could be set to end. Last year was without doubt a struggle for New York and sometimes very ugly, but there are certainly positives in them going 7-10 without their star quarterback they literally built everything around — and they were even 4-3 at one point! Of course, there are questions still around Rodgers after missing an entire season but he has the pieces around him to excel even if he gets off to a slow start, while the defense is stacked and capable of shutting down any team they come across.

The Bills could be in for a down year given the departure of some key pieces on offense, so I’m expecting a dogfight for the division between New York and Miami. They play each other in Week 18 at MetLife so it could all come down to that, and if that’s the case, I believe the Jets defense can do enough to keep the Dolphins juggernaut in check.
