Minnesota Twins vs Detroit Tigers: NRFI (-132)

The Minnesota Twins look to stay hot and extend their 5-game winning streak today when they prepare for a rematch with the Detroit Tigers. Sonny Gray takes the ball for Minnesota, and he’s been one of the best starters in baseball this season. Through 22 starts, Gray owns a 3.18 ERA and has recorded a quality start in 3 consecutive games. Gray’s underlying metrics don’t jump off the page, but he’s limited runs and been a solid arm for Minnesota all season long. Going up against a Tigers’ lineup that’s scored the second fewest runs of any other team should work in Gray’s favor and I expect him to make it out of the first inning unscathed.

The Tigers turn to their ace Eduardo Rodriguez, who surprisingly stayed in Detroit after the trade deadline despite a plethora of teams going after him. Rodriguez is having a career year and owns a 2.96 ERA across 16 starts with opposing lineups hitting just .222. His 34.2% hard-hit rate falls in the 80th percentile, while his barrel% ranks in the 79th percentile. With two of the best pitchers in the American League toeing the rubber tonight, I have to back a scoreless first inning in Detroit.

Atlanta Braves vs Pittsburgh Pirates: YRFI (-136)

The Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t score in the first inning of yesterday’s Game, but they teed off against Spencer Strider and knocked him out of the Game in the third inning after putting up a 6-spot. It was an impressive offensive showing from the Pirates, and if they can torch Strider, they can certainly find success against Yonny Chirinos. Through 6 starts and 17 appearances, Chirinos owns a 4.42 ERA and has a 7.03 ERA over his last 8 appearances. It doesn’t appear Chirinos is going to improve anytime soon either, at least according to his underlying metrics. Chirinos has a 5.72 xERA alongside a 13.0% strikeout rate which is among the worst in baseball. There aren’t a ton of compliments to throw at Chirinos so it’s advantage Pittsburgh.

Mitch Keller takes the mound for the Pirates with a 4.35 ERA and a 3.95 xERA. Keller has performed well this season, and his 33.6% hard-hit rate, 25.4% strikeout rate, and 7.3% walk-rate are the best marks he’s put up since his rookie season in 2019. While Keller is having a solid season, he’s been steadily regressing and owns a 7.49 ERA since July 3. If you haven’t been paying attention, the Braves are one of the most dangerous lineups, not only this season, but in the history of Major League Baseball. Atlanta leads the MLB with 213 home runs and their on pace to break the single-season team record of 307 set by the Minnesota Twins in 2019. The Braves are relentless, and even after falling down 6-0 in last night’s game, they made it a game and ultimately lost 7-6. This Braves’ lineup is special and I’m almost always expecting them to be the first team on the scoreboard.
