Mikel Arteta 'happy' for Aaron Ramsdale following horror moment in Brentford win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta revealed his delight that Aaron Ramsdale ended up on the winning side in their 2-1 victory against Brentford on Saturday.

Ramsdale was drafted back into the Gunners' starting lineup as first-choice goalkeeper David Raya remains on loan from the Bees and is therefore ineligible to face them in Premier League action.

On a rare chance to impress, Ramsdale fluffed his lines and gifted Yoane Wissa an equaliser after Declan Rice had put Arsenal ahead. The England goalkeeper was caught in possession and his clearance was deflected back into the goal.

Ramsdale came up with some important saves in the second half before Kai Havertz popped up with a late winner to ensure Arsenal took all three points and moved to the top of the Premier League table.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Arteta stressed Arsenal cannot afford any slip-ups in the title race and expressed his happiness for Ramsdale at helping his side to victory.

"A really tough opponent to play and we had the Game under control at 1-0 but we conceded and then had a beautiful challenge in the second half. We were so aggressive and got rewarded," Arteta said.

"Mistakes are part of football and it's how you react to that. I'm so happy for Aaron and I'm so happy that we won the game.

"You have to win every game with the level of Manchester City and Liverpool. There is no space for slip-ups. We really had to respond to the challenge in the second half and show our maturity. We were emotionally really mature.

"The whole Game the way the fans reacted and the way they push the team is amazing. It is a joy to be there and enjoy a Football match with your supporters.

"The hardest thing in elite sport is to do it every three days. The willingness amongst the group is really special. I will have a relaxed Sunday."

When further asked about his thoughts on BBC's Match of the Day, Arteta added: "I am really satisfied with the performance and the result obviously, and the manner we did it.

"It was against a team that demands a lot of emotional control and we did in a great way. We showed courage and we were rewarded.

"At 1-0, it could have been a very different game but with the goal we conceded we had to play that game, but in the end we deserved to win the game.

"That is the beautiful thing about this stadium. They support with mistakes. We had certain things we would have to overcome, we were going to do it and we fully believed we would do it."
