The Marlins just looked over matched from the outset. Much of the Game was scoreless and while the first three innings were a stalemate, they never had the pop that the Yankees had in their bats or their pitching.

The Yankees win this one 7-0

Yankees win!

Bryan De La Cruz the hitter now and he grounds the first pitch to third. Once again, Berti goes to first and that is it. The Yankees win!

Nick Gordon up now and he goes after the first pitch as well, grounding another one to third for Berti. The throw to first and that is two away.

Top 9th

Nick Fortes jumps on the first pitch and grounds one to third. Jon Berti goes to first and there is one out.

Pitching Change

After eight sizzling innings from Nestor Cortes, Aaron Boone will go to his closer Josh Maciejewski to finish this one out.

Gleyber Torres up now and incredibly he takes the first pitch for a ball. The next delivery is fouled off.

The 1-1 delivery from Andriese is grounded to Tim Anderson. The throw to first gets the thrid out.

Jon Berti the hitter and he lifts a fly ball to right field, but García is there to put it away. Two down.

Jose Trevino up now and he goes down swinging on four pitches.

Vidal Bruján will come in from center to play second as Nick Gordon comes into the Marlins defense for Luis Arraez. He'll take over in center.

Alex Verdugo leads off and dribbles a roller to third. Rivera can't make the play and Verdugo has a leadoff infield single.

Vidal Bruján up now and he lifts a routine fly ball to left for Alex Verdugo. The Marlins retired in order.

EMMAnuel Rivera the hitter now and he falls into a hole 0-2.

Cortes delivers a peach of a breaking pitch and Rivera chases it for strike three.

Avisaíl García leads off and he lifts a towering shot to the wall in right field but Juan Soto is able to run it down. One away.

Anthony Volpe the hitter and he works the count to 2-2 before fouling two off in a row. The seventh delivery of the at-bat misses and the count is full.

Andriese's payoff delivery is fouled back and we do it one more time. A cutter is called strike three and Volpe is not at all happy about that call!

Anthony Rizzo up now and he lines a shot out to right field. Avisaíl García gets on his horse and makes the catch. Two down.

Giancarlo Stanton leads things off against the new pitcher and strikes out swinging on three pitches.

Pitching change

The Marlins will bring on Matt Andriese to replace Burch Smith.

Tim Anderson to the plate with two out and a runner on first and he pooches a roller to short. Volpe fields it and steps on the bag to end the inning.

Jake Burger up now and he goes down swinging on three pitches. Two gone

Josh Bell the hitter now and he bloops a little pop fly to second but Torres is there to put it away. One down.

Top 7th

Bryan De La Cruz leads off and he rips a single up the middle to center.

Aaron Judge up now and he grounds a chopper to third. Rivera charges it and makes the throw to first to end the inning.

Juan Soto the hitter now and he works the count full before the payoff delivery from Smith is a 97mph fastball blown past him for strike three. Soto wasn't happy about something with the catcher and said something to Fortes. But in the end just walked away.

Bottom 6th

Gleyber Torres leads off and once again goes after the first pitch, as he has done all day. This time he lines out to left fielder Bryan De La Cruz. One gone

Luis Arraez up now and he lifts a fly ball to left. Verdugo has to get on his horse but gets to it and the Marlins go down 1-2-3

Nick Fortes the hitter now and he lifts a fly ball to center for Judge. Two gone.

Top 6th

Vidal Bruján leads off for Miami and he lifts a high fly ball to left field but Verdugo is right there for the first out.

Jon Berti will face the new pitcher and he takes all three strikes without getting the bat off his shoulders. The Yankees tag on another though and lead now 7-0

Pitching change

Manager Skip Schumaker will make the change now, taking the ball from Luzardo and calling on Burch Smith to take over on the mound.

José Trevino up now with two out and a runner on first. There is movement in Miami's bullpen. Trevino works the count full before the payoff delivery misses for a two out walk.

Alex Verdugo up now and he lines a shot to center field for a single. Stanton will trot home and the Yankees tack on one more!

Emmanuel Rivera up now and he lifts a fly ball into foul territory. Rizzo chases it down and makes the catch to end the inning.

Avisaíl García the hitter now and he lifts a fly ball to right field for Juan Soto. Two gone.

Top 5th

Tim Anderson leads off and he goes down swinging on three strikes.

Aaron Judge the hitter now and he lifts a pop fly to first base. Burger camps out under it and makes the play to end the inning but not before the Yankees take this game by the scruff of the neck. After four, the Yankees lead 6-0.

Juan Soto HOME RUN!!!

Juan Soto the hitter and he blasts a monster a mile high and waaaay over the short porch in right. Another three run homer and just like that the Yankees are up with a commanding six run lead!

Gleyber Torres lifts a fly ball to right. Verdugo thinks about tagging but the throw from Avisaíl García is on the money, so he wisely stays put.

Sacrifice bunt

Jon Berti up now and he lays down a bunt up the first base line. Luzardo fields it and goes to first. Verdugo goes to third and Trevino moves up to second.

José Trevino the hitter and he draws a walk on four pitches.

Double

Alex Verdugo up now and he rips a ground ball past third and FAIR! He rounds first and is in there with a double.

Anthony Volpe HOME RUN!!!

Anthony Volpe up now with nobody out and men on the corners. He blasts a high drive to left field! That is back and out of here! A three-run home run! The Yankees are on the board!

Anthony Rizzo the hitter and he chops one over the glove of Burger at first for a single. Stanton makes it to third on the play.

Bottom 4th

Giancarlo Stanton leads off and slaps the first pitch into left for a leadoff single.

Jake Burger up now and he works the count to 2-2 before fouling five in a row off. The ninth delivery from Cortes is a high two seamer that gets Burger swinging to end the inning.

Josh Bell the hitter now and he lifts the first pitch to straight away center field. Judge is right there and puts it away. Two gone.

Bryan De La Cruz up now and he pokes a line drive to right field. It falls in for a single, the first base runner of the game for Miami.

Top 4th

Luis Arraez leads off for Miami and he lifts a towering shot to right field but Soto is able to get to it for out number one.

Aaron Judge to the plate and he lifts a fly ball to shallow right field for Avisaíl García to end the inning.

Double

Juan Soto the hitter and he drives a sinker into the left field corner. It makes it to the wall and Soto is in with a standup double!

Gleyber Torres up now and he gets into a hole quickly, fouling off three in a row. The 0-2 delivery is a nasty slider that Torres can't hold off on. Two away.

Bottom 3rd

Jon Berti leads off for the Yankees and he works the count to 2-2 before Luzardo blows a 97mph fastball past him for strike three.

Nick Fortes up now and he lifts a fly ball to shallow left. Alex Verdugo grabs it and Nestor Cortes is perfect through three. Nine up and nine down.

Vidal Bruján the hitter and he pops a high foul ball near third. Jon Berti gets to it and brings it down in foul territory for the second out.

Top 3rd

Emmanuel Rivera leads things off for the Marlins and he works the count to 2-2 before Cortes delivers a cutter on the hands that is roped toward left. Anthony Volpe makes a beautiful stab at short and comes up with it! The throw to first gets the out.

The catcher José Trevino up now with two outs and men on first and second. Luzardo misses with the first two pitches before a fastball catches the inside edge. The 1-2 is popped up into shallow right field. Avisaíl García gets to it and ends the threat. After two, we are still scoreless.

Mound visit

Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre will stride out and have a word with his pitcher, try to settle him down a little here.

Alex Verdugo to the plate now and he also draws a walk on five pitches. This is worrying for the Marlins.

Anthony Volpe the hitter and he draws a two-out walk on five pitches.

Anthony Rizzo up now and he works the count full before the payoff from Luzardo is fouled back. We do it again.

The next delivery is nubbed off the hands to third. Burger makes the routine throw to first and it is two away.

Giancarlo Stanton leads off for the Yankees and he jumps on the first delivery, chopping one to short. Anderson goes to first. One pitch, one out.

Avisaíl García up now and he falls behind in the count before chasing high heat for strike three. The Marlins go down in order.

Tim Anderson the hitter now and he rips a bullet up the middle but Anthony Volpe makes a great diving catch! Two gone.

Top 2nd

Jake Burger leads off for the Marlins and the first pitch misses outside. Burger fouls the next two off before a fastball in the dirt makes it 2-2.

A four seamer catches the bottom of the zone for a ꓘ, called out looking.

6-4-3 Double Play

Aaron Judge up now and he works a deep count, 3-2 with two fouls, before the payoff delivery from Luzardo is grounded to short. Tim Anderson flips to the bag and Arraez throws to first to complete the double play and end the inning.

Juan Soto the hitter now and he shows more patience, working the count full before the payoff delivery misses high for a free pass.

Bottom 1st

Jesús Luzardo takes the mound for Miami as Gleyber Torres will lead things off for the Yankees. Torres jumps on the first delivery and lines it to right for Avisaíl García. One down.

Josh Bell up now and he falls behind in the count before lifting the 1-2 delivery to deep right field. But not deep enough as Juan Soto camps out under it to end the inning.

Bryan De La Cruz the hitter now and he works the count to 2-2 before lifting a fastball to straight center field for Aaron Judge. Two up, two down.

Arraez lifts a fly ball out to left field for Alex Verdugo and it is one away.

PITCHING

The Marlins will go for Jesús Luzardo, who has had a rotten start to 2024. In his last outing, he gave up four hits and three runs over 5.1 innings in a 3-1 loss to the Angels. He has one of the best fastballs in the game, but if you make contact it can go a long way.

The Yankees will call on Nestor Cortes, who has struggled in both of his starts this season, giving up eight hits and three runs over five innings in a 7-0 loss to Arizona his last time out. He had a solid season last year and the Yankees are confident that it will come good for him, and between the two, it is New York who can back him up with the bat.

Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of Game 1 of the three game Bronx series as the Miami Marlins head into the lion’s den to face the New York Yankees.

The Miami Marlins have had a stinker of a start to the 2024 MLB season, losing nine in a row. They snapped that run in their last outing, beating the Cardinals 10-3. Today, they will hope to extend that win into a double, and they are doing it in perhaps the scariest place in baseball, Yankee Stadium.

Sitting dead last in the NL East, Miami is averaging only 3.33 runs per game. Their .208 batting average sees them 25th in the major leagues, while their .275 on base percentage is 29th. They have some big bats on their roster; Luis Arraez, Bryan De La Cruz, Tim Anderson; but they simply can’t get going. Jake Burger has been their hottest bat with a .314 average, two home runs and ten RBIs.

The Yankees have been the mirror image of Miami, sitting on top of the AL East. They have won all of their first three series. Their bats have been hot, with a 4.56 runs per game average. The pinstripes have not yet shown their full potential, but there have been flashes sufficient enough to see what they are capable of. Anthony Volpe is their hottest bat, with a .379 average while Giancarlo Stanton is right behind him, blasting two home runs and seven RBIs.

Taking two games each off of Houston and Arizona will have the Yankees feeling good about their chances, and if their bats come alive at the same time, they could be unbeatable. But the Marlins have played the role of David to many a Goliath before and New York can’t afford to let their foot come off the gas pedal for a second.
