Pakistani fashion designer Maria B has once again taken centre stage in the world of fashion with her latest collection, this time dedicated to a cause close to her heart—Palestine. The new collection, adorned in the colours of the Palestinian flag—red, white, black, and green—features prints reminiscent of the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh. The designer announced the launch on her Instagram with a message that has sparked both praise and controversy.

Captioning her launch post, Maria wrote: "Freedom and Unity. Presenting a collection that holds a special place in Maria's heart— a tribute to the enduring spirit of our Ummah. Falasteen. Inspired by those who stand tall, this collection embodies unity and strength. Launching online and in-stores tomorrow... All of the proceeds from the campaign will be donated to Palestine."

While the gesture was meant to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and their struggle, it has received a mixed response online. Social media has become a battleground of opinions, with many either lauding Maria's efforts or criticising the designer for what some perceive as opportunism.

A wave of backlash followed the announcement, with many netizens accusing Maria of capitalising on the Palestinian cause for her own gain. One user commented, "While Palestinians are getting killed in the blink of an eye, Maria B thinks it's the best time to start her modelling career by appropriating their culture. Her horrible clothes aren't going to Free Palestine. She needs to be transparent about which charity she will be sending the proceeds to. No one is falling for this stunt. Shame on everyone involved in this campaign."

Another critic urged people to support Palestinian businesses directly, rather than purchasing from Maria: "Instead of purchasing from this opportunist using Palestine for her own branding I would encourage people in the comments to purchase such things directly from Palestinians."

The backlash did not stop there. Another comment read, "Will you also be donating all profits to Palestine or are you just using someone's suffering to make money yourself?" This skepticism is reflective of a broader concern among some consumers about the sincerity of brands that align themselves with social causes.

However, despite the criticism, Maria has also received considerable support from her followers, many of whom praised her for using her platform to raise awareness for Palestine. One supporter commented, "She is the only designer who is speaking out for Palestine." This sentiment was echoed by others who viewed the collection as a bold and necessary statement from a prominent South Asian Muslim designer.

"Love this! Finally, a popular south Asian Muslim designer using their platform. Bravo!" another follower wrote, highlighting the significance of the designer's iNFLuence in the fashion industry and beyond.

Some users even saw the launch as a beacon of hope, expressing their eagerness to purchase from the collection. "I've never waited this much for a collection in my life," one user admitted, showcasing the anticipation that the launch has generated among her faNBAse.

Another supporter added, "Respect for you! Can't wait to buy!" emphasising the excitement surrounding the collection despite the controversy.

Amidst the polarised reactions, a significant portion of Maria's audience remains staunchly in her corner, praising her for taking a stand. "All the feminists in our country are attacking her but she is doing more for Palestine than all of them!" one user argued, defending the designer against her detractors.
