Manchester United are looking to tie promising midfielder Hannibal Mejbri down to a new contract, sources have confirmed to 90min.

The 20-year-old has already been capped 26 times by the Tunisia senior team and is now making his way into the first-team fold at Old Trafford.

Hannibal scored his first goal for United at the end of last weekend's 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

90min understands that Erik ten Hag is a fan of Hannibal and the club believe he is worthy of being handed a new deal.

Hannibal's current contract expires in the summer of 2024, though United retain the option to extend this by a further year. It is highly unlikely that the club will let him walk away for free at the end of the season.

The midfielder is keen to prove himself at United, who he first joined in 2019 from Monaco for an initial £4.35m fee. This sum could yet rise to £8.7m if various add-ons are met.

United have made a poor start to the 2023/24 season and they have lacked cohesion in midfield. Summer signing Mason Mount has just returned from injury following an inauspicious start to his Old Trafford career, while key target Sofyan Amrabat only joined on an initial loan on transfer deadline day.

Ten Hag has used a total of six midfielders already this season - Hannibal, Mount, Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Scott McTominay - while there were high hopes that 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo would make an impact before he picked up an ankle problem, potentially ruling him out until 2024.
