Liverpool and Manchester City have been the two best sides in the Premier League in recent years and they face one another on Sunday in a Premier League blockbuster.

Football fans have mixed feelings about the Community Shield. Many couldn't care less, while some view it as an entertaining curtain-raiser for the new season. Fans of the two teams involved certainly do care, though, and Liverpool and City met at Wembley to begin the 2022/23 season.

It only took Trent Alexander-Arnold 22 minutes to open the scoring, with his cross/shot taking a deflection which bamboozled Ederson. This was Erling Haaland's first game for City and the Liverpool end took great joy from him missing a couple of very good chances.

Julian Alvarez eventually levelled for City, but Mohamed Salah tucked a penalty away in the 84th minute after a Ruben Dias handball. It was also Darwin Nunez's first Game in English Football, and the Uruguayan adding a third made everybody wonder whether Liverpool had the better striker out of the two.

Having won the Community Shield against City, Liverpool then got the better of the Cityzens again, this time in the Premier League. The first big chance at Anfield fell to Haaland but the Norwegian headed straight at Alisson - adding fuel to the fiery claims that he fails to show up in big matches.

Haaland was at the centre of the action again when Phil Foden thought he'd given City the lead, only for the play to be pulled back for a foul on Fabinho in the build-up.

There were great chances at both ends but eventually it was Salah who wriggled free of a challenge after Alisson's pass upfield and he put Liverpool a goal to the good with 15 minutes to play.

It was a game that really could have gone either way, but the points stayed on Merseyside.

Having already met twice in 2022/23, Man City and Liverpool were drawn to face each other in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup. That was great news for other teams in the tournament as it meant a favourite would be knocked out.

Haaland opened the scoring and finally had a goal against Liverpool, but it didn't take long for young Fabio Carvalho to get Liverpool level. A beautiful goal at the start of the second half from Riyad Mahrez put City back in front, but Salah equalised just a minute later - his third of the season against City in different competitions.

Nathan Ake settled the game in City's favour, netting before the hour-mark.

  • Man City 4-1 Liverpool: Player ratings as Reds crumble at Etihad Stadium

In the final of four meetings between the two sides in 2022/23, it was City who won again, this time by a much wider margin.

By this point in the season, Liverpool were really struggling with injuries and were down in seventh in the table. City, meanwhile, were hunting down table-toppers Arsenal.

Liverpool actually took the lead through Salah - his 11th career goal against City - but goals from Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish saw the champions roar back to secure a coMMAnding victory on home turf.

The statement win ultimately proved crucial in the title race, as Arsenal wilted in the closing stages to allow City to lift the Premier League title once more.

  • Man City 1-1 Liverpool: Player ratings as Alexander-Arnold rescues Reds late point

This season's clash at the Etihad was a much tighter affair, with Liverpool keen to make amends for their poor showing last season.

Haaland opened the scoring in a game that kicked off early on Saturday afternoon, after Nunez had missed a glorious opportunity to put the Reds ahead. Ruben Dias then bundled the ball home to make it two, only for Manuel Akanji to be penalised for fouling Alisson in the build-up.

City were frustrated with the decision, feeling their had been minimal contact, and they were antagonised further when Alexander-Arnold drove home a superb equaliser with ten minutes remaining - earning Liverpool a precious point on the road.
