Landlord slammed over bizarre text to potential tenant: ‘That’s illegal’
A woman has revealed the bizarre reason she and her partner were denied a rental property by a landlord.
Christina Mayo revealed she and her partner, Devante Mclemore, had inspected a property in Tennessee.
However, when filling out their rental application, the pair came across a strange section labelled “Freedom of Religion”.

Under the sentence “I acknowledge that the landlord of this property is a professing Christian” there were four options to choose, outlining the prospective tenants’ own religious status or views.
Although confused by the questionnaire, the pair continued and submitted their application.
They then received an email from the landlord, who denied their application because of their response in that section.
“Can someone help explain to me what I just f****** encountered ?” Mayo asked in a Facebook post, along with screenshots of the conversation.
“This is an application for a house for rent by the owner whom we met today when we looked at the house. He was nice, and I thought things were going well until this happened ...”
Mayo shared the email from the landlord which stated upon a “quick look” at the application they “immediately” came across an issue.
“Both of you checked off that you are Christians, and so I need to work with you as a brother and sister in Christ. In that case, both of you should know that living together outside of wedlock is a sin,” the email read.
The email even included a Bible verse which referenced the “sin”.
To further complicate the matter, he added he “can’t aid and abet (them) in disobeying dad”.
“Think about all the things that have blown up or gone wrong in your life,” he wrote.
“I’m certain that those things did not occur because you were seeking righteousness. Rather they happened because you went against what dad said.”
Mayo said she was completely at a loss after reading the email, and decided to follow up directly via text
“I literally just read it and am confused,” she said in the exchange. “You’re denying us because we are not married?”
The man responded it was because they were specifically “Christian and unmarried”.
“Had you marked ‘not Christian’ then I would have gone ahead with the application review,” he said.
Outraged, she pointed out to him that by “passing judgement” he is inadvertently “sinning”, which she’s sure “God wouldn’t like”.
Mayo’s post quickly gained many social media responses from people who were outraged and claimed the act was discrimination.
“Religious discrimination is illegal,” one person said.
“Sue him, that’s illegal!” added another.
But one suggested: “I’d say you dodged a bullet on this one”
