Boustead Heavy Industries Corp Bhd’s (BHIC) wholly-owned subsidiary, BHIC Submarine Engineering Services Sdn Bhd (BSES), has bagged an award from the Malaysian Ministry of Defence (Mindef), representing the government, to award the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Prime Minister Class Submarines contract worth RM43.60 million. The contract will contribute positively to the earnings of the BHIC Group for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2024. The contract entails the expansion of the scope of work and additional contract ceiling price for the in-service support interim for the RMN submarines. A formal contract between the government and BSES will be finalised and executed at a later date.

Prime Minister-class is a Scorpène-class submarine built for the Royal Malaysian Navy by Naval Group, formerly known as DCNS in Cherbourg, France and Navantia in Cartagena, Spain. In 2002, Malaysia ordered two Scorpène-class boats worth €1.04 billion (about RM4.78 billion). Both boats Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Abdul Razak commissioned by Royal Malaysian Navy in 2009. The Scorpène-class submarines are a class of diesel-electric attack submarines jointly developed by the French Naval Group (formerly the DCNS) and the Spanish company Navantia. It features diesel propulsion and an additional air-independent propulsion (AIP). It is now marketed as the Scorpène 2000-class submarine.
