The 37-year-old Denmark captain, recently signed after his Anderlecht contract expired, has expressed his enthusiasm for his new club, emphasising his desire to excel in an environment focused on winning.

Reuniting with manager Brendan Rodgers, with whom he shared a successful period at Leicester City including an FA Cup victory, Schmeichel reflects positively on their previous collaboration.

Rodgers himself has lauded Schmeichel as a top-level player and a proven winner.

Speaking to the media after his first training session with Celtic, the new Celtic signing said: “It feels great. I am absolutely buzzing to be here to be fair.

“Once I spoke to the boss it was exactly what I wanted and everything I have been looking for. I am happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.

“The biggest challenge is always making sure that you perform.

“That’s what I’ve been brought here to do and it’s my job to be the best I can be for the team and help this team keep winning and progressing.

“This is a new kind of experience for me in the sense that I’m coming into a team that have a huge History of winning and that hasn’t been something that I’ve done too many times in my life.

“In that sense, I’m looking forward to the challenge of coming into a club that is used to excellence and having the highest of standards.

“That’s the kind of thing I usually thrive on, so I’m looking forward to being a part of that.

He signed a one-year deal, with an option of an additional year. But, with Celtic signing younger keeper Viljami Sinisalo this summer too, it does hint at some forward planning from the club. Sinisalo will learn from one of the best as he aims to take the Celtic gloves in the coming season.
