Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin refused to get himself caught up in any Celtic title race discourse after his side found another late winner last night.

The Dons hosted Dundee United at Pittodrie in a hotly anticipated league clash yesterday evening and walked away narrow 1-0 victors.

Neither side played particularly well, but as they have on several occasions this term, Aberdeen found a way to win.

Substitute striker Peter Ambrose came on in the 82nd minute and, within 120 seconds, found the back of the net, finishing from close range to send the wet Pittodrie crowd wild.

Aberdeen went top of the table courtesy of the victory, with pressure now on Celtic to leapfrog them back to the summit this afternoon against Motherwell at Fir Park.

Post-match last night, Dons boss Thelin was asked about jumping above the Bhoys and into first place: “I don’t think anything about that at all, actually, because it’s still early,” he said (The Scottish Sun).

“For us, we want to enjoy today and then focus on the next Game tomorrow.

“Today, it’s just about enjoying the three points.

“You can ask me the same question after the last part of May, maybe, but not now.”

It isn’t controversial to say that Aberdeen are Celtic’s closest title challengers at the moment.

Thelin deserves the utmost credit for the job he has done so far in the Granite City.

After yesterday evening’s hard-fought win, his side prepare to face second-place challengers Rangers in the northeast midweek.

Celtic will monitor proceedings at Pittodrie on Wednesday while they host Dundee at Parkhead. First, though, Rodgers must negotiate Motherwell this afternoon.
