International Delivery Driver Appreciation Day (August 18th)
Forget putting delivery items in a car that can get stuck in traffic for long stretches of time! Instead, people in urban areas can benefit from the use of bicycle delivery riders who can make it quickly and efficiently to their destination – and in an earth-friendly manner.
International Delivery Driver Appreciation Day is here to say thank you and show appreciation for these folks who are making deliveries on bicycles all over the world!
History of International Delivery Driver Appreciation Day
The concept of delivery riders isn’t necessarily a new one, tracing its roots back to couriers who would tootle around on their bicycles delivering messages, papers or other small items.
These messengers began appearing almost immediately following the invention of the two bicycles in the mid-1800s.
Although the concept may have evolved over the years, the usefulness of these delivery drivers remains. Today’s delivery riders have special, insulated packs that they can place on their backs to make it possible for them to carry several food orders at a time for delivery. It’s an efficient system that benefits everyone involved.
A fairly recent event, the inaugural celebration of International Delivery Driver Appreciation Day took place in 2023 when it was organized through the efforts of the Hungry Panda company, a specialist food delivery company located in London.
The event takes place on this day as a nod to the way the numerals “818” resemble the silhouette of a bicycle rider with a pack on top. Also, the numeral “8” sounds a lot like “eat” which brings even more of a connection.
To honor these ‘delivery heroes’, this event pays tribute to these hardworking, dedicated riders who bring those delicious meals right to doorsteps across the city of London as well as all over the globe!
